HSPA modem has just stopped working on windows 8

Hello I am new here. I have an HSPA 3G modem and have been using it successfully for over a year on my laptop which runs Windows 8. All of a sudden the modem has just stopped working. I have uninstalled the software and tried re-installed it and and it still is not working. It simply says "no service". I unfortunately do not have access to another computer to see if it is perhaps the device itself that is faulty but tomorrow my s on is coming over with his computer so I will see if the device is working on his computer although he is running Windows 7. I am by no means a computer 'FUNDI" so I am not going to be able to understand if the answer is too technical. Thanks in advance, Elizabeth.
