Ok, I know I'm jumping the gun here, but what do you guys think about this one?

http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_x7500.htm

Will release in Europe around March/April 2007 and probably in SA by 20?? :D

Bit disappointing to see that it comes out with Windows Mobile 5.0, but that shouldn't be a problem for long, seeing as we will probably have rom upgrades before we get the phone

The rest looks pretty good.

Btw: It's also released as the "T-Mobile Ameo" or "HTC Athena"

very nice, but not exactly something you could put in your pocket. I'd probably rather go for an Imate Ultimate 7150.

A work colleague has just got an HTC Advantage X7500. It did not come with any GPS software at all. I presume we need to buy this (TomTom or Garmin?).

However, surely I can use the GPS receiver with the downloadable Google Maps...? The problem is, Google Maps cannot connect to the GPS receiver.

Under Start/Settings/GPS, I can set the GPS settings for "GPS Program Port", "GPS Hardware Port" and "Baud rate". I have NO idea what these should be, and there is NO documentation for this at all in the box! Can someone advise please?

You do have to buy GPS software - I'm using TomTom and it works very well. However, I have also installed Google Maps and it's working too. The maps for South Africa are very sparse at this stage but the satellite view is pretty cool and can be useful if you're looking for something remote.

The settings on my device, which seem to work with Google Maps, are Program Port COM4, Hardware Port COM5 and Baud Rate 38400. For a much more detailed discussion, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375959. It's worth getting things right - this is a great device and the 5" screen is ideal for GPS.
