Seems Vodacom has issues...

I've had my eyes on the Desire S as an upgrade on Weekend Everyday 120 for a while now as a replacement for my Nokia 5800 (which has been great). A few months back, VC wanted R2000 for the Desire S as an upgrade so I waited for the price to come down. Patience paid off, the phone came down to R819 on upgrade. So, I check the vcupgrade.mobi site and think, "Great!" because the site says "Stock available".

I would rather handle upgrades and contracts in person than over the net since doing things in person means that someone can be held accountable if something goes wrong. At Vodaworld yesterday, the Vodacom Shop Manager, Andrew, said that they had no stock. He said that the warehouse had been having stock issues and they don't know when stock will arrive. He tried every other shop in Vodaworld (none had stock) and he also tried every Vodacom Shop around Jo'burg "that he could think of", none of which had stock either.

So can someone please tell me why Vodacom is having issues with getting this phone? Should I contact Leaf to find out whether they're still bringing the Desire S in or what the problem is? How do I go about solving this problem?

I'm tempted to port over to MTN now.

I had a similar issue with Vodacom, they took 2 months to get my upgrade. Worst part was that I had to follow-up with them and all they could say was "we don't know", not even an attempt to help. Went to MTN, got my new phone and contract sorted in under a week. Won't be going back, that's for sure - the one guy at the Vodacom branch is so useless and shows absolutely no care for the customer, very half-hearted client management.

Well here's something fairly impressive: I tweeted Pieter Uys (Vodacom's CEO) and not 5 minutes later, I got a tweet back from Vodacom111 asking for my contact details. It gets better...

I've just received a call from Miranda who said that their "system isn't showing whether the phone is available or not, but I'll check with the retentions division tomorrow and update you." She also asked what store I applied at for the upgrade.

The hugely impressive thing is that the call came through at 18h00 - on a Sunday evening! Surprising but very good service so far. Will update once I have more details.

I have checked and spoke to the guys...and there is stock in the warehouse. The shop just need to order it for you.
Seriaas? OK, brilliant, many thanks. Should I just give the shop a call then? I'm still waiting on the call from Miranda.

A bit strange, because the Manager of the Vodacom Shop in Vodaworld was adamant that there were stock issues and a notification came through on the 19th of Oct which agreed to that effect.

Will update once the situation has changed. Thanks again mate!

I think the Desire S is one of those phones that aint readily kept on hand in the stores. They dont move fast enough for that. This is the case in the stores that we own. But if a client comes in to do a upgrade or new contract and requests it..we will order it no probs. In the metro's delivery is done to the stores the day after tomorrow during the day. Store shoud give you a shout once its ready for you.

Miranda returned to me saying that they did have stock, and that I can order over 082 1959 for free delivery, free SIM, etc, etc.

Thanks for your help, I'm expecting the phone to arrive in the next few days.

Glad you got sorted in the end :)

How are you liking the phone so far? I'm thinking of ordering mine pretty soon - can't justify the price of the Galaxy S2 at the moment.

Just save a bit more, Sheepbot!

The Galaxy S2 is worth every penny & there are some good deals on it nowadays.

By far the best phone I've ever owned.

So no iphone no dhd just gs2 for u all the way nice

Argghh you devil! :p I think I'll wait for MTN's new pamphlet to come out on the 17th - hopefully they drop the price of the S2.

LOL....been there, got the t-shirt.

Sometimes you just can't ignore it when a really great phone comes along. The SGS2 is one of those phones. :)

And with HTC Sense disappearing for SA customers, was good to see Samsung giving their customers DIVE. It works really well, when I login to the site, it finds my phone, I can ring it, pull call logs from it and.....wipe it.

I'm really enjoying it. Coming from a Nokia 5800, Android is incredibly intuitive. I haven't had time to set it up properly yet but I'm amazed at how easy it is to use. The screen is mindblowing too. I wanted the S over the normal Desire because of Gingerbread and hopefully, ICS will come to the S too.

I've never used a Samsung before, let alone the S2 - I've had Nokias and one Motorola (never again, never). The 5800 was really good, it is just about bulletproof. I certainly looked at the S2 and the iP4 but they were just too expensive.

One more thing: can anyone help me with data packages? At the moment, I'm on this 100MB 'free' for 3 months thing but I'm wondering what data bundle I'll need to get once the 100MB thing is finished? Would 30MB/month be good enough?

That depends on whether you have home WiFi or not...if you don't you probably need 300MB/month not 30.

Yup - I'm exactly the same. Also have a 5800, never owned a Samsung and also only had one Motorola (Never again :p).
