HTC Evo 4G available in SA yet?

Can't search for HTC Evo 4G on the forum.
 
The EVO 4G is a CMDA+LTE phone, it uses a different mobile standard to what is used in South Africa. Any phone that is sold by Sprint or Verizon in the united states will not be released here.
 
Seriiiias? That sucks :p

so whats an alternative equivalent? My Tytn II is giving up on life.

A friend of mine also had a HTC Tytn II.....and he upgraded to the HTC Desire! Best move he ever made!!! Has chucked his Tytn in the cupboard and not looked at it since. He is constantly on this phone all the time, he can't put it down.

I've owned my Tytn II for almost three years, which is a record.... its served me well. The things its been through.

Just a small nit-picky correction, the data portion is WiMax ... and NOT LTE (LTE is the GSM 4G technology - and in fact some would argue that WiMax isn't really technically 4G either!). So in theory you could use the WiMax portion with a provider in SA for data, but not the CDMA as we have no CDMA operators in South Africa (yet!). Go to Namibia and Telecom Namibia offer both CDMA and WiMax, so in theory, you could use it there :-)

Prototype 4G (GSM - LTE) device and their radios are very large still and most likely to first appear as 'fixed mobile' solutions e.g. usb dongles etc. so I wouldn't buy a phone based on waiting for this just yet. I don't have one, but everybody seems very impressed by the HTC Desire!

Sorry, my mistake CDMA+WIMAX. Technically nothing that has been billed as '4G' is at the moment, since one of the key aspects of 4G is 100mb/s download speeds. But then Evo 3.9G just doesn't have that same ring to it :P

I doubt we will ever see a CDMA carrier here - GSM is a better standard, which is why CDMA is only used in the states and a smattering of other countries.
 
The EVO actually can work on GSM: "Inside the HTC EVO 4G is a Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 SoC. This, unlike the Snapdragon in the Nexus One, supports both GSM and CDMA networks, which is what lets this phone work on Sprint." that is according to Anandtech.

The 4G portion is unlikely to work unless you can hook up to a WiMax signal.

Except for the part where CDMA phones dont have sim-cards :P
 
Im just saying it can work on GSM radios because of the SOC, theoretically HTC could just add a sim card slot (and a few lines of firmware codes) and it should work as what the americans are calling a "world phone".
 
I'm holding thumbs for the Motorola Droid X (CDMA) to be available on GSM network. (also a bigg-ass phone like the Evo to be released on 15 July in the States)

The previous Droide, a CDMA phone, was sold as the Milestone in GSM regions, few moths after initial release.
 
Hey don't Telkom do Wimax... There is a rumor that they looking to enter the mobile SP world, but come on now, who in their right mind loves telkom LOL :)
 
I had a Tytn2 as well, ended up running Android on it, and it was like a new world! Can't stand Windows Mobile anymore! Keyboard got stuffed, took it in for repairs, and got told I can upgrade as well. Upgraded to the Desire, and wow! I got my Tytn2 back from repairs, and the screen is so tiny! I have put it in a drawer, not looked at it since...I will get a new Memory card for my Desire soon, then put the one I got in my Tytn 2, Android the device again, get GPS software and a few Android games my girlfriend is addicted to and she will be making use of the phone. Just know, being free of Windows Mobile is awesome! Android is such a dynamic and progressive operating system...I will never go back to the stone age!

You can say that again!

My sis got herself a SE Xperia X10 and also enjoying Android. But why stop with the phone? Freed her pc at home from Windows XP, put Ubuntu 10.04 on it, plugged in the Xperia X10...and voila! Just drag and drop between Ubuntu and the Xperia.

Life without Windows. :p
