HTC Evo 4G. I know it's only limited to the States but what if one unlocks it?

Is there anyone on this forum (in South Africa) who has an unlocked HTC Evo 4G, or who knows of anyone who has one? Also, if I buy it will it work here?

If you guys answer no to all those questions what HECTIC smartphone can I get in SA. I don't want the Iphone 4, a Blackberry or the HTC Desire (the Desire, because I've been waiting for mine for 2 months and I'm over waiting!).

Help please....

First: In the US it's available on Sprint which is a CDMA network. I don't think that it will work in SA as we use GSM. HTC recently launched the Desire Z and Desire HD - the Desire HD is basically a GSM version of the EVO without the 4G lie tagged onto it.

If you don't want to wait for one of those then you're options are limited. The Samsung Galaxy S is a very good option - Android 2.1 with their own skin on it and 2.2 should be there for it by the end of the year (though I don't know what the rollout plan looks like for SA). I have a colleague and a friend who each have one and they're very happy with it. The Desire is the other good option, but I'm guessing it's out of stock as we're waiting for SLCD screen versions of it (AMOLED shortage and all).

You might consider the Sony Ericsson X10, but that's running Android 1.6 and won't be upgraded until late October last I heard. The hardware is good, but the version of Android is quite outdated by now.

HawkiesZA pretty much sums it up. If you want the EVO, wait for the Desire HD. If you want a good phone now, get the Galaxy S. A CDMA phone cannot be made to work here, it is a completely different technology (It doesn't even use a sim card :P) so it is not as simple as something like a ntwork unlock
