HTC HD2

Hey guys,

anybody have any idea if there is stock of the HTC HD2 lying around anywhere... reason I want this phone is that I am used to WM6.5, but still want to experiment with WP7, and the HD2 is the only phone that WP7 can be installed on (albeit illegally, but its not like that ever stopped anyone)...

So yeah, basically, looking for one on contract if possible...

Why do you say "albeit illegally''? I have a HD2 but have been burning to try WM7 out. I need to keep WM6.5 though as there is a program I use that is not ported to WM7. Maybe someone else will bring out a similarly equiped program in the future *hopefully* that will allow me to then switch completely.

Back to WM7 I was told that the HD2 will have an upgrade. This appears to be only for certain models aka "LEO" which was released in some other countries.

There will not be an update to WP7 for the HD2. It does not meet the button requirements of WP7.
There is an unofficial and yes, illegal, version of WP7 that the fine folks over at XDA Developers have worked on.

Remember, WM7 or Windows Mobile 7 does not exist. There is a new product, WP7 or Windows Phone 7.
An upgrade to WM7 for the HD2 may have been planned but since they are not making it anymore there will be no update.

In the last MTN and Vodacom ads I saw, both were offering the HD2 on a contract.

mmm, well having looked around on the net, there are a couple deals (all Vodacom), but nobody has stock

And I was hoping for MTN, as I get better rates from there (corporate contract)... well, looks like I will be getting another phone, selling it off, and then using the proceeds to buy a HD2...

If so, must I buy it to make it legal - where and how much?

I'm not sure how the licensing works for Android but it is open source and so I do not think it would be illegal to put on the HD2.
WP7 is unavailable to be licensed on devices other than the ones that the OEMs make. The license costs between $5 and $7 to them.

Loading Android is not illegal, but will void your warranty if they catch you with it...

It's not illegal.
However, it's not supported or approved by the vendor. That's an entirely different matter.

I've been blowing cooked ROMs into my phones for years and years. The HD2 is currently on Dutty's ML Final V18 WWE. Love it. Tried Android and WP7 on the HD2. WP7 is very nifty, but I can't sideload apps which I often use. WM6.5 with Sense is slick, stable, multitasks, cuts&pastes, and for now does everything I need. Best phone I've ever had.
