Hi,
So my GF has an HTC hero with about 1 year left on her contract, tried to use it over the weekend and it is a POS phone...Can I put a better version of Android on it? I think it has 1.6 which is what it came with.
I remember there was a lot of discussion about which phone was upgrading to 2.2 etc and how leaf was failing to support the local Android phones, what was the outcome in the end did they ever offer updated software or do i have to root the phone to get a better OS?

Any help will be appreciated.

Go to Leaf, and they will upgrade the firmware for you. For free. I went to the Lab88 shop here in Fourways, and they offered to do so for me.
HTC has released the 2.1 update for the phone. It's our network operators who are dancing around the issue of FOTA.

For those of you that was or is still in the same position that I was in, I have taken the bold step to upgrade my Hero self and not to take it to leaf.

During the last week I updated my HTC Hero from V1.5 cupcake to V2.1 (Eclier) and V2.3 (Gingerbread). Surprised how easy it was and now running the latest android OS on my Hero.:D

....Android V2.3 - Gingerbread V2.3.

That line just there is the bigest threat and the main reason I think why SP's don't like OTA updates.

Alot of people would say put on a custom ROM, but I upgraded to CM7 a few weeks ago and I must say I'm not pleased with these modded roms, they never seem to be 100% complete... some nice features yes, but I would be so much happier if I could get my original agenda and calender widgets back
