Can I flash the rom on a Magic from Vodacom and run it on MTN? If this is possible, what are the pros nd cons of doing this. I read i the forum that this will void the Vodacom warranty?

It's illegal for phones in SA to be network locked, so I can't see why it shouldn't work. I know of a few people running Vodacom bought iPhones on MTN for example...

I guess it could void the Vodacom warranty. But what is that really? Every time you take your phone in for repairs the claim it's 'water damage' in any case...

It will most likely void the warranty on the phone yes. But even if it does not, another point to remember is that if a phone's IMEI is not active on Vodacom for I think it is 90 days then the warranty is suspended. For details regarding this please visit http://www.vodacom.co.za/phones/warranty_information.jsp

Regarding the water damage thing. I book in a lot of phones for repair and send it off to Vodacare and cant say that I have had a repair come back as water damage that was not founded. Either the client admitted to me before hand that it is water damaged or afterwards he will admit that he did infact spill liquid onto it.

So if I boot the phone with the prepaid sim every 3 month, it should keep it within that warranty?

Also, the warranty only speaks about hardware of the phone, howcome flashing the rom voids the warranty?

Can you please point out from extract of the warranty?

One more question, does this then void the manufacturer warranty as well?

btw. I appreciate your input, I think it will let users know and be aware of warranty issues that may cause misunderstandings after the deed was done.

Knowing Vodacom - yes it will void your warranty. They need just the slightest excuse not to fix your phone or whatever needs doing.

But if you happy to take the risk then do it, You can always say that you were just updating your software.

I am not sure if loading MTN software on it will void the warranty or not...but would not be surprised if it did. I would leave the software as it is. The phone should not be locked to Vodacom anyway so functionality wise it wont make a diff. You will just need to get the settings for MMS and internet from MTN. These settings wont affect your warranty. If you were to put your Vodacom prepaid sim in it once a month for a hour or two so that the IMEI registers on the database then that should keep your warranty active. From what I have been reading on the MTN forum not sure why you would want to use MTN...but hey...if you prefer them then who am I to argue :)

I was told that the moment you put another network's SIM into a phone the warrantly is void. This action is immediately picked-up by the networks. One can see all the phone/modem IMEI's used on one's number on Vodacom4me.

I dont think that rings true BeVonk. It is only once the IMEI is inactive for a certain amount of time on Vodacom network. Below is a quote out of the warranty page on vodacom.co.za

An "active phone" for the extended warranty scheme purpose; is a phone which has been used on the Vodacom network for a period of at least 30 days in the last 90 days at the time of presenting the phone for repair under the extended warranty scheme. Usage includes making or receiving calls.

Well I hope it's not true as I'm swopping phones/modems and SIMS all the time (daily even).

Because I will be debugging android apps on the phone, i would like to run the latest firmware on it to test against. For this reason i will be flashing the rom regardless of the warranty. I just needed a heads up as to whether the warranty will be void or not. And if I do a factory reset , does this not re-flash the rom with the original firmware, shouldnt this then be the same as a out-of-box phone?

Wonder where one can get official response on this matter?
