I thought I'd go the HTC way and got myself a HTC s710. I thought the keypad, as well as the functionality of the keyboard would be awesome. I was wrong.

This is the worst phone I have ever used. It's incredibly slow. Even shifting the keyboard out takes the screen about 5-10 seconds to change it's view. The phone gets so insanely slow that I have to reboot it sometimes...which takes almost an entire MINUTE to do. The applications bomb out. The sounds turn off or don't work at random, which means in the mornings I am late for work because the alarm doesn't go off...other than the fact that I can never hear my phone when someone is calling me so I have permanently got it on vribrate. The phone lasts less than a day. I hate this ****ing phone. I'm taking it in to Cash Crusaders today and getting myself a cheap nokia which I know works a ****load better than this piece of crap...and to think I wanted to go and get myself an HTC Touch. Hell no.

My wife's S710 has some of the same issues, including:
  • Complete Hanging. You need to remove the battery to reset
  • Screen goes black but keyboard looks like it is still functioning (Keyboard lights up when a key is pressed). Phone not working, though.
  • Sometimes connecting the charger starts the vibrator and requires battery removal to reset.
  • Invalid SIM card message

The phone has been in to Vadacare 3 times and everytime it comes back saying that nothing is wrong and that it may be her SIM card that is the issue. The SIM works fine on other phones and the phone does the same with two other SIM cards.

The problem is that these issues appear completely random. At first I thought it was to do with some of the apps I loaded (e.g. Leaf Locate) but it also happens after a complete manufacturer reset. I think the engineers looking at the phone just switches it on, take test picture, record a voice note and send it back saying it works fine.

Has anyone else had any of these problems?

I think you guys might have just got a bad batch.

Mine works perfectly and has decent speed even when i have multiple apps open.

Maybe take it to leaf to flash the firmware?

Sheesh, sounds bad. I've had none of those problems.

I've had only one app that has hanged on me, and that was leaf locate... But I'm sure that will be fixed.

I've really pushed the phone a bit with emulators and such and a bit of multitasking.

mmm... Is leaf's support good? If my phone starts pulling tricks like that it will get sent right back!

I wonder if the phone even made it all the way to Leaf or if this was Vadacoms own service personnel declaring nothing wrong with the phone.

My bet is that it was Vodacom themselves. IIRC from my last upgrade, the manufacturer carries the 1st year of the warranty, and VC the second year. Give Leaf wireless a call and ask if they had your phone with them ... my money is on the answer being no

Phone Leaf give them the 3 jobcard numbers from vodacare and tell them this is unacceptable from there part and demand a new phone.
They can give a new one, Vodacom wont give you a new one easily!

Just to shed some light ... different phones use different contact points on a SIM card. i can tell you from first hand experience that a SIM could work perfectly in one device and it can cause another device to do weird things. if you do have an old SIM, it would bve in your best interest to do a SIM swap ....
That was my initial thought as well so I tested the phone with 4 SIM cards (2 Vodacom and 2 MTN). Three of these SIM cards are used on a daily basis in other phones and the one VC card is a brand new PAYG card I purchased from VC just yesterday when I went to collect the phone for the 3rd time. The phone started giving the same issues within 30 minutes of it being recharged and the new SIM inserted.

I've sent the phone in for the 4th time.

HTS 710 problem

Hi BEB,

I have the same problem as this! Did you manage to get a fix?

After the 4th "Repair" the phone was replaced. None of these problems since.

I've had the same problem this week, got my HTC S710 back from HTC and they had changed the mainboard, keeps coming up with this SIM problem, especially after cold boot, I did a re-flash and was then told to do a hard re-set, the SIM works Ok in other phones and another SIM in this phone also exhibits this fault, I hope that I don't need to send my one back 4 times.... (I had an S730... that went back to HTC as it had inherant design flaws, I eventually sold it on EBAY, the buyer was "delighted"......
