HTC Tattoo vs Nokia 5800XM ?

What, no onscreen keyboard in Android? Surely there is an app for that?

Does the Tattoo not have writing recognition like the 5800? You can do voice searches on Google with the 5800. I assume that an Android driven Tattoo can also do voice searches? At least on Google.

From the reviews I have read they said the keyboard is a bit cramped in portrait mode, but works well in landscape mode. Can't wait to get my hands on an android phone.

Onscreen keyboard sure there will be but it's a tiny screen...it's bad enough on a big screen like the iPhone.

It's got a onscreen keyboard, obviously! Cerebus is just concerned about the size of the screen vs. onscreen keyboard usability.

Dream's got the better screen and looks, but I'll be afraid that it struggles with 2.0.
I'll go with Tatoo if I had to pick. At least it'll run faster but it's kinda ugly!

I'm considering taking the plunge to android and getting a tattoo for my next upgrade instead of a nokia, but concerned about a couple of things:

1) Does it allow wired and bluetooth tethering to a laptop as I use mobile data bundles often
2) Does it come with an office doc viewer (more specifically word and pdf). I don't need an editor
3) What is the GPS start-up and accuracy and the software like? Does it come with lifetime licence and on device map as opposed to constant connection maps like googlemaps?
4) My experience has been mostly with nokia's (6110, 5800, e65) and and sonyericsson (P990i) and they have really good ability to capture signal and call quality has been far superior to other phones in the same areas. How does the HTC tattoo compare?
5) Are the camera pics better than the 5800 as they both have 3MP cams?

I think this is a toe-to-toe slug fest between these two phones. Has anyone had some hands on experience with both? Can you back up your personal preferences with good reasons?

Can Android take on Symbian yet?

Is HTC build quality up to same spec as Nokia? Apparently Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is manufactured by HTC.

My thoughts so far:
HTC Tattoo
Con - 2.8" 240x320 screen, limited Android apps for 240x320 screen
Pro - 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM will probably get Android v2 upgrade

Nokia 5800
Con - R40pm more expensive, propriety OS needs jail breaking.
Pro - 3.2" 320x640 screen, ships w 8GB microSD

Have at it Guys... Which do you choose if you had to order next week?

Or wait six months, use your own phone on MTN R19pm for R50 airtime till the next killer phone is out.

Vodacom has the Nokia 5800 XM for R135/pm on Weekender

I would still go for the HTC Touch

I don't have a Tatoo but I have a Hero so I'll answer some of your Q's based on mine with same OS

1) Wired tethering is out of the box enabled. Wifi and Bluetooth tethering after rooted.
2) Yes both out of the box, there's more on the market too.
3) I have NDrive installed. Maps are on my Memory card and believe it will last a lifetime

The other things will differ probably!

Had the same options, Tattoo vs. 5800xm. Took the 5800xm as its both a Smartphone and Multimedia device. Video rec. VGA@30FPS +2mbps bit rate, TV-Out with TV-Out cable in box, great 3.2inch screen at 640x360 res, a 3.2mp camera with Auto Focus that has been improved in v31 fw, and once hacked S60v5 is great. Personaly i like the UI, not too much eye candy,and as an ex s60v3 user i feel right at home. The larger 1320mAh battery of the 5800xm with s60v5's power saving features means fantastic batt life. Being able to update the firmware right on the phone via the Device Update app is so convenient. Updating to v31 took just 9mb phone was updated with in 12mins. Also the App. Update feature allows updating of built-in apps. 5800xm also has Flashlite3.1 which means the built-in browser can do sites with flash9.4 if i remember correctly. Personaly im loving my 5800xm,glad i took it.

TV-Out with TV-Out cable in box

I bought mine in New Zealand and I never got a TV-Out cable. Even on the Nokia website it's not listed as included in the box, and it's not listed under the supported accessories either. Maybe it's not available in NZ for some reason. I'm a bit annoyed about this.
That and Comes With Music makes me wish I could be more patient and buy it in SA

Anyone know how much the cable costs if you buy it separately in SA?



Well I've had my 5800 since Christmas. I love it, but I do have a couple of complaints:

*The earphones that come with it are s**t. No bass at all. It's shocking that they include that with an "XpressMusic" phone.
But you can plug in another pair of headphones or earphones. I connected my Sennheiser headphones and it sounded excellent, so the phone itself is capable of good music quality.

*The GPS device is weak. When driving around on a cloudy day it simply could not connect to the satellites. You need to let it connect before getting in the car.
Our old Garmin Nuvi also struggles in these conditions, but manages to get a solid connection after about 10 minutes.

On a clear day while driving around, it still struggled a lot. The Nuvi had no trouble in the same conditions.

Outside on foot on a clear day it gets a solid signal within a minute as it should.

So for driving around I think it makes for a terribly unreliable navigation aid. I have read that you can get a signal booster or bluetooth GPS device though.

Part of the problem seems to be the software though, I notice Google Maps had much less trouble getting a fix while driving but that might be a coincidence.
