HTC Touch HD

Due for an upgrade in a week and seriously considering this...

Anyone have any major objections to this phone?
I'm upgrading from a Tytn 2 so I already see the lack of a keyboard and d-pad being a bit of a learning curve...

Why not wait a week or so (hopefully) for the Touch Pro 2. It's the spiritual successor to the TyTyn 2 and has the full Touch Flo 3D software just like the Touch HD.

The HD has a 3.5mm jack and a better camera but the Touch Pro 2 has a D-Pad and a QWERTY slide and tilt keyboard. Think about it..

Yeah I'm weighing up the 2.. (quite literally)
Touch Pro 2 is pretty much the same size and weight as my Tytn2, and that's a little excessive to say the least...

Both devices have pretty much the same hardware so the OS/Software side of things are not really an issue (I'll flash a new ROM on either device anyway).

Comes down to form factor and responsiveness of the screen which is another big concern..

If I didn't need a keyboard, I would've taken the Touch HD.
But I'm very happy with my Touch Pro 2.

Have just installed some emulators... woo what fun!

If you really need the keyboard, het a machine with one. I don't like a hard keyboard on the pDA, so the THD is ideal for me.

I find myself in the same boat as a lot of the other people in this thread ... namely upgrade time.

I've had a look at the TouchHD (it feels pretty wide in the hand, more like a PDA than a phone) and I am not a fan of the Pro 2 (purely cause those keyboards aren't thumb friendly to me). What I finally settled on (I have a few days yet to decide) is the Touch Diamond 2. I am surprised no one has mentioned it here yet.

Same CPU as the HD , same resolution as the HD (though slightly less wide screen means a higher pixel density - which isn't a bad thing). Same memory too.

Oki CPU is Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 MHz processor vs Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor - but I don't think it makes too much difference.

The only downside for the Diamond2 is the battery (it has a 1100 mAh vs the HD's 1350 mAh)

Comments . suggestions . flames welcomed

Well I think if you're gonna go just touchscreen, the HD is the winner.
It's has a 3.8" display vs 3.2" and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

I'm not sure what the price difference is between the two though and whether the spec difference warrants the price

...TouchHD ... Diamond2 ..?
I have both. I've been using the Diamond2 for the past few weeks while the THD is in for warranty repair (the touch screen stopped recognising touch so back to UK service centre as Leaf can't/won't do it).

Quick brain dump/random thoughts:
* THD is much nicer to read websites and RSS - larger screen for my bad eyes
* D2 is nicer to carry - fits in shirt pocket
* I've grown to like the zoom pad on the D2
* I thought I wanted 3.5mm audio jack, but in reality I never use it (THD)
* GPS sat acquisition is slightly faster on the THD (larger antenna?), but both are very fast, and much faster than anything I've had before
* Speaker audio is about the same - both are too soft for me
* I've adapted to the Win button on the D2 - quick access to programs/settings; use the TF3D tabs on the THD
* The D2 seems to take marginally better snaps - suspect it's just software and settings
* Prefer the smaller ff of the D2
* THD feels better quality build

I've HardSPL'd and reROMed the THD (but temporarily back to stock for the warranty repair) because it's been the flagship device and people like Duttythroy do great things on it (the bleeding edge XDA-Dev guys go for THD). I won't be fiddling with D2 ROM.

Both phones are great. And yes, I prefer a WM device. Very customisable.

Had one, not a bad phone at all... But selling it to get a Palm Pre... Before the HD I had a X1 - also a good phone, but the keyboard and screen was just too small... And on the HD the physical keyboard was too...missing?

So, Arthur, if you had to choose one, which one would it be?
Now you've put me in a spot. Functionally they're much the same. If I absolutely had to pick only one, I'd probably take the THD because of the larger screen. But I really like the smaller form factor of the D2, so maybe that's the one. Aw heck man, how does a gadget-freak decide?! Sorry, Mercs, I'm not helping here...

Played with both the Touch Pro 2 and the HD - I took the HD and extremely happy with it!.

The Palm Pre & the X1 has got nothing on the HD!

I actually cannot fathom how you could say that the you're ditching your HD for the Palm Pre! The X1 and the Palm Pre are equally crap compared to the HD which is Leaps and bounds ahead of them both! Makes me wonder if you've actually know what you're talking about!!! The Palm Pre is so featureless compared to the HD! Its size and physical keyboard layout is just fugly and awful to use compared to the HD! The Keyboard is awefully small, and feels quite flimsy since it is a slide phone!.

Its got no Memory card slot, it has no FM Radio, it has a small screan, no touch screen!!! only a 3.15 mp camera, does no Video! has no 3G camera for video call.....

Hehe, I figured it was probably a tough choice :p

Thanks for the input guys..

Also leaning towards the HD.

Arthur, how's the responsiveness of the touchscreen? On my Tytn2, using the onscreen keyboard with my thumb is hopeless..

Now for another spanner in the works - what do you guys think of importing the HTC Hero.....?

Viven, I'm not a heavy text sender so the HD's keyboard is perfectly fine with my fat fingers (I'm 6'3"). I rarely hit the wrong key. I get a few more errors on the smaller D2 screen, but for quick replies it's fine. I also had a TyTN2 a while back and I agree the onscreen keybord wasn't usable with fingers. With TouchFlo 3D HTC have a new and better keyboard that's a dramatic improvement, and it works fine with fingers.

Just to add to this... If you have the Touch HD and you're trying not to run up your phone bill online.... stay away from the Youtube applet, it downloads all the content in HD (for obvious reasons)... I watched a handful (not more than 5) of video clips on youtube and its already billed me R255! Its really not worth it! Otherwise the phone is fantastic!

I find it hard to believe that 5 short videoclips could chew 200meg!
