Overall, this is a no-nonsense mobile device that I’d recommend to anyone upgrading to a new phone.

I used to be a big fan of HTC phones. I was so impressed that I ended up buying a new model every year for five years. Eventually, I became so irritated with having to deal with all the known issues that have plagued Windows Mobile devices that I changed brands and became a fan of Symbian.

But after testing the Touch HD for the past two weeks, I can quite honestly say that I haven’t come across the usual buggy issues that these phones have been plagued with in the past – shutting down by itself, hanging, dropping calls, etc.

It may be obvious at first glance that HTC wanted to design a phone to compete with the iPhone. And yes, I might have agreed with you when my eyes first glanced over the device. But it’s much more than just a multimedia phone. It’s an incredible business device packaged in an Armani suit, Bugs Bunny silk tie and slippers. It’s fun to use, practical, comfortable, looks really expensive and ticks all the right boxes for a smartphone. The welcome screen, when you power up the Touch HD, now makes complete sense to me – Smart Mobility.

The impressive 480 x 800 WVGA screen resolution makes it a dream for Web-surfing enthusiasts, especially with the ultra large 3.8-inch screen. Reading/writing e-mails, text and Word documents have now become a pleasure for me to do on a smartphone. Text input is far more efficient than other touchoperated devices that HTC have in their current range. The large touch-screen keyboard is simple to use and even though the phone comes with a stylus, it’s definitely no longer needed. One of the only issues I’ve noticed is that the phone will hang for a couple seconds when you’re writing text and the like. The Touch HD also makes use of the nifty G Sensor function, which rotates the screen either in landscape or portrait mode, depending on which way you’re holding the phone. HTC have also packaged a game that takes full advantage of the G Sensor. I’ve spent hours having fun playing Teeter waiting for my next meeting. Side note: I have noticed that the G Sensor function is limited to only a few applications, but maybe we’ll see this feature being used a lot more once the new WM OS hits the market later this year.

Surprisingly, battery life for the Touch HD is extremely impressive. I can go a full day and a half without having to recharge; and this is quite exciting considering I have push mail connected from 7am to 7pm everyday and the phone is attached to my ear 24/7. The Touch HD comes with Pocket Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, PDF viewer) making business on the go practical and efficient. Overall, this is a no-nonsense mobile device that I’d recommend to anyone upgrading to a new phone.
