My phone has become very buggy...especially the display in touchflo.
How do I do a rom update without messing up my phone entirely? I understand all my stored info & service provider settings will disappear if i do any upgrade. Is this true?

My rom version is 1.90.421.1 dont know if this is the latest. thx

Hi Kompete

Simply use PIM backup to backup all your phone data to the storage card. Then flash a new rom (look around at forum.xda-developers.com for a rom of your liking) and then restore the pIM backup again. Easy :D

OK thx. Not sure what PIM backup is but will find out...

What do you mean by a rom of my liking, is there no standard/latest rom upgrade ?

There are standard roms as issued by HTC, but there are MUCH better roms "cooked" by the guys at HTC. Far more optimised and they import apps from the newest phones on the older phones as well. For example, I have a Touch Diamond 2 but I'm running the upgraded software from the (yet to be released in SA) HD2.

I haven't checked it, but here's a RapidShare link to PIMBackup. Copy the file to your phone & run it from inside WinMo. It allows you to backup/restore all your personal info on the phone to your SD card.

Get your ass over to XDA-Developers - a community built around HTC and related devices.

Right at the top of that page is a sticky, Flashing your first GSM Raphael ROM (for noobs) - have a read-through. As long as you follow the instructions, you won't have an issue. Down the page are the various threads of the ROM chefs - custom versions often containing tweaks & software you won't find in the standard HTC ROMs. I'm using NRGZ28's ROM - works well.

There's a LOT to learn with WinMo/HTC phones; ROMs, different radio drivers, With Touchflo (HTC's interface), without Touchflo etc. etc. You can find all the relevant info hidden somewhere on that forum.

Use at own risk ;)

When you update the ROM in WinMo, all the stuff in your phones memory is erased, but the memory card remains untouched. If you have access to wifi, use Microsoft's MyPhone service to backup all your contacts, photos, messages etc first. You sign in with a Windows Live ID, and get 200MB to store stuff.

AFAIK, HTC will not be releasing official ROMS with Windows Mobile 6.5 for the original Touch Diamond and Pro. As the above posters said, for anything newer, read up on xda-developers.

I had a look on the leaf wbsite and there doesn't seem to be any ROM updates for the Touch Pro 1. There don't seem to be any on the HTC site either so yeah, your best bet is XDA.

You 'll need to:
  1. Back-up your data
  2. HardSPL your phone (this allow you to flash any ROM)
  3. Download the ROM of your choice

Sounds like a mission :o. Thanks guys!

Well it seems a little daunting but it isn't really.
You'll only need to HardSPL once and then it's done forever. And then you only need to backup again if you're flashing a new ROM or doing a hard reset.

I've found that once you start flashing, you won't stop cos there are so many great roms you'll want to try
