Hey

Need some help.

Have an Tytn2 on MTN, would like to use it as a GPS system to indicate roads to travel etc.

Decided on TomTom, now I just need to know what version of TomTom I should get and where? Im also looking for maps for Southern Africa (This includes Botswana and Namibia)

Should I get TomTom 6 Advanced Navigator or what? Also is this the best software to get for this device and for the areas I want?

Interesting to see what others say...

I currently use TomTom, I think six, not sure where to check the version, the maps I have are 2005 or 2006, and I find them to be seriously lacking with regards to smaller towns, it only covers the bigger cities... Have you considered Garmin, or *gasp* HandyMap, much better coverage.

I had tomtom navigator six installed. it works on the tytn II but I still prefer garmin xt. now both of these might have been *cough* full test versions  however, i think that garmin xt is only available for nokia phones, legally anyway and tomtom is difficult to find in SA

I ended up uninstalling both and bought a Nuvi, the tytn II became very hot while being used as a gps, from car charger and in the sun..

Yeah, and I don't know if you've noticed, but when its hot, it doesn't charge.

BTW... did you get Garmin XT working on the Tytn II? I can't....

the most frustrating 5 hours of my life, but yes got it working. various patches and the IMG from a nuvi but it worked just fine..

Yeah.. I gave up... it was easier on my old E90.

Ok...

Now Im even more confused! Also what is Leaf Locate? Can it do the same as TomTom and Garmin or is it basically just a digital map?

It can...but it requires GPRS to download maps..

Ok..

Anyways I installed handymap, the 15 day trail version. Installed Western cape maps etc. and all seems to work fine. Does anyone know if Handymap has maps for Botswana and Namibia...

Also Handymap isnt that great looking but it seems to be pretty accurate and pretty simple once you get the hang of it? Anyone have complaints with Handymap?

Not sure about those countries... I know it has international maps...

My only complaint was that its fugly...

Went with TomTom... They have Southern Africa maps (Not just South Africa) and it works pretty good, thanks for all the help and comments by everyone though.

I would recomend installing Garmin Mobile XT on your HTC. I installed it on a colleague's phone during the week. Took me less than 10 minutes to install the actual program, but it took ±25 minutes to intall the maps he needed. He is going to Chicago for company bussiness and a street navigator will be a lot of help. also I installed the March 2008 Southern Africa map as well. This map has most of the latest streetname changes incororated as well. I would not go for TomTom at this stage, because Core distributors, who "was" the official TomTom agents in SA have dropped them because of "lack of support".

I am also a new TYTN II user and already have a Garmin Nuvi 610, but would also like to install the Garmin Mobile XT on the TYTN II, so I don not have to carry two devices around.

Where can one get Garmin Mobile XT & SA Maps from, as our local Garmin agent is less than helpful with regards the above.

I tried both Garmin and Tomtom.

Garmin is a little sluggish on the tytn2 due to the display driver issues whilst tomtom runs smoothly due to its more simple graphics system....

Also, I think I prefer the menu layouts of tomtom as it gets one going quickly.

There's a version of tomtom which was supposed to ship with the tytn2, but I think Leaf decided to remove the CD from the packaging since they are promoting a different product.

This version specific to the tytn2 can be found if you search on xda-developers.com. The maps can be purchased from Tomtom directly although there should be other sources also.

Leaf.co.za sells Garmin XT software for HTC handsets for approximately R1000,00. Remember to ask them for the interface.
