HTC TyTN / Imate JasJam

What firewall are you using ??? what anti-virus application are you using ??

Windows built-in firewall.
Trend-Micro PC Cillen 2006.

I completed Step 1 the manual way last night.
Then attempted Step 2. It only gets to "Verifying information from Hermes..." and nothing happens after that.

OK, did Step 2 at work, worked like a charm.

I'll do Step 3 during lunch time.

your problem lies between the Windows Firewall and Trend ... you need to make sure the following services are allowed in your program exceptions list ...

ActiveSync Application
ActiveSync Connection manager
ActiveSync RAPI manager
ActiveSync service

Okay, quick GPS app review:

I had a Garmin Nuvi 310. It was pretty good, easy to uses very handy features etc and got the job done. But the maps and SW only works with Garmin hardware, you pay for any map updates and the devices are expensive.

so when I bought my TyTn, I sold it and got handymap AI Gold. I bought a bluetooth GPS receiver cheap off ebay, and away we go. I was really impressed by it. It worked perfectly, and I did not miss the Nuvi at all. I quite liked the idea of not leaving an expensive GPS hanging from my windscreen to tempt all & sundry.

So this afternoon I checked out nav4all at www.nav4all.com They claim to have FREE GPS nav software! I downloaded, got it hooked up and it actually works. It is free, so its rather basic, not nearly as nice as handymap. But it will definitely do the trick, and you don't really need the funky 3D nav of handymap, nav4all works just fine. The problems is that it does not work of a map installed on your device. It looks like it downloads the local area info from you phone internet connection as you go along. not cool

Finally, I got also tried the latest version of tomtom navigator today. OH MY WORD! this puts everything else to shame. Handymap does'nt even come close. It is beautifully optimised for PDA use. you set it up for left hand use, so you use your left hand whilst driving. All the buttons are big enough so you can use your left thumb to access any menu option whilst driving. The interface is so simple a child could use it. The 3D nav is stunning, and you can download about 20 different colour schemes for it.
And the navigation is great. While handymap always tried to take me in the most direct route to the nearest national road, this one guided my via provincial roads, much less traffic and higher speed limits.
And the celebrity voices thing rock! I am currently undecided between having John Cleese or Yoda guiding me.

So, hope that helps.

@dotVIBE - where can I get the software from?
My wife is getting the N95 which has a built in GPS but the route planner needs to be purchased extra. I would like to have that function on my Tytn and would like to compare.

dotVIBE - What was the make and model of your USB GPS thingie again?

Hmm. I could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you. ;) Seriously, tomtom.co.za only advertise their autogps devices, tomtom.com does not advertise the map. You basically need TomTom navigator and the tomtom SA Map. So for buying it, i recommend sending an email to the guys at tomtom.co.za. I acquired it by uh... uhm, other means?

TyTN Screen not switching on after a while...

Guys, I have been observing my TyTN since I got it a couple of weeks ago. One thing that I must say is that my battery hardlyt lasts the whole day. I have to charge it daily:mad: !! A day or so ago the battery wen pap and phone awitched off completely!!! I usually leave it connected on wifi at work (but I have set an auto 5min disconnect) and I usually hit the On/Off button whenever I'm not using it.

Another thing that I have observed is that sometimes (once or twice a day), after the phone being on standby and I want to use it, which I usually press the On/Off key. The phone does not switch On. Even if I try to call it it does not ring!! Even if I try to switch it On/Off it does not respond (though that flashing light will be flashing). I then have to take off the battery and put it in again????

Any similar experience or solutions for this behaviour?

sleep of death!

what ROM are you using? And are you really still on radio 1.18?

Since Im new to WM, Its a bit difficult to tell u what is what. But I can confirm that I followed and installed all those 4 steps/links u posted on that post a while ago. Since then, I havent made any upgrades what so ever.

I must say that its really annoying, and it always happen if I lock the key pad then hit the On/Off key Or just leave it to go on standby on its own. after half an hour or so I find myself not being able to switch it on nor receive calls, etc. The worse thing is it does not even ring!! The battery factor is also a low major turn off!!

Will definitely try it. But I have already exhausted my 500 data bundle (even though I can continue to download) I'd rather not. I also forgot to bring my Virgin sim card so this means I can only download them tomorrow night or sometime on monday/tuesday! One question, do I need to download HARD SPL again cause I downloaded it on post# 2071?

nope, once installed, always installed. but make sure what radio you have installed, 'cause last time I think i advocated 1.40.30, and that should still be fine.
check: start>settings>system>device info
