I though you could not edit the SMS tones apart from the standard ones? Is this not so?

Did you try put the mp3 in the \Windows folder? After that you need to set it in "sounds & notifications":
Tap Start > Settings > Personal tap > Sounds & Notifications > Notifications tab. Then tap the down arrow next to the Event box and find "Messaging: New text message"

This is my current setup. It worked on the original WM5 that shipped with the tytn as well as the latest release from leaf.

Of course you can. I keep all my tones in the applications data / system sounds folder. Don't use the "My Ringtones" folder

I must agree with you.... Missing Sync REALLY rocks... but it don't work on WM6

i have loaded an MP3 into application data/sounds and gone to select it on sounds & notifications and under new sms - and in the drop list i dont see the MP3 file
