HTC Wildfire - Froyo update on Vodacom?

According to this article, "Leaf has revealed that the updates for the Hero , Legend and Wildfire will become available at the end of January 2011 as well".

Well I'm on Vodacom, and "Settings -> About Phone -> System software updates" simply reports that my software "is up to date". I'm on 2.1-update 1, and would really like the 2.2 update without rooting (seeing as it should apparently be available).

I thought I'd ask here, because it seems that customer support isn't always very clued up when it comes to Android. Is it possible to go to a Vodacom outlet and let them do a software update for you in-store without sending it to Johannesburg or anything? Also, if it's available on another network like MTN, would I be able to skelm a MTN sim from a friend and do the update over wifi?

I'd prefer not to root my phone because I'm having trouble with the speaker (really bad quality, but it hasn't always been bad) and might still need the warranty.

Backup and return for this issue. Then root afterwards. You may find while it is in for the warranty repair, they upgrade it to 2.2 anyways. Of course, then you won't be able to root. Once you go root, you never want stock.
 
Thanks GreGorGy. I'm just putting off taking it in because every time I've ever taken a phone in for repairs it's taken them about 2-4 weeks to get it back to me O_O. I need my phone for day-to-day stuff.

Also, if I do decide to send it in, should I be worried about the privacy of the contents of my phone? Passwords, photos, anything sensitive really?
 
ooooh. that's a bit below-the-belt on their part. thanks for the heads up. I think I'll probably backup everything that I can, reset the phone myself and then send it in. Thanks for the help GreGorGy
 
Okay, can someone explain this situation to me, Im a Desire owner, bought my gf a wildfire this weekend on vodacom, I thought I would then update it to 2.2, but couldnt. So now I see you say send it in for repairs??? how bout if its got that 7day return policy?? but them giving me a new one out the box wont fix it will it. so now I want to know why the hell so people like vodacom get the right to control software upgrades? damn asses.

Is there any way to update the wildfire without rooting, or will I then have to wait for vodacom to release the update?
