Does any place in SA offer training and certification of HTML, CSS , PHP etc? Been doing the W3Schools thing, and I see they do have certification, however, is that accepted?

You'd be better off building a decent online portfolio and also a solid GitHub profile with personal projects.

I've interviewed quite a few devs for frontend positions at my company. I am way more interested in what you've been working on as suppose to some 2month certificate.

This, we almost exclusively ask them for either gihub or bitbucket account to see what they do.

thanks guys... have a couple of ideas for sites. Quite big, will think of something basic and small as well.

Hey, are you trying to break into the field as a newcomer? Or do you have working experience and just looking for a step up?

Well, what do you know, and what are your goals?

With 16 years exp, learning any new language is trivial, so just pick one that you think will make you happy/increase job opportunities

If someone new to dev asked me what they should learn, my answer would probably be Javascript, and/or Kotlin, or Java if the former seemed daunting.

Java is by far the best ecosystem for server side web dev

Newcomer with web dev. 16 years dev exp...

Awesome man.

First thing is to get a decent grasp on web development, how everything fits together. Basic stuff like the understanding the client and server side relationship. Understanding where code runs, where there might be a bottle neck, concurrency etc. Understanding HTTP (post, get, etc). Good grasp on security, like XSS, SQL Injection etc. This might seem trivial but you'd be surprised how many web devs don't know the difference between post and get and the pros and cons.

Once you have good idea of the flow and how everything is integrated, then you can focus on a server side language. Since you have 16 years xp in dev, it should be easy for you to pick it up.
