I am subscribed to various mailing lists and newsletters and these mostly are formatted in html for best presentation with fonts and images inline and generally looks good in mail applications like Outlook etc.

However, I have been quite disappointed with most mobile phones not natively supporting rendering of html formatted emails.

Even Blackberry support for this is sparce, the standard being text based mails.

I have found on the Nokia 5800 that it adds a html attachment which when opened wants to connect to the Internet as it uses the S60 built in Browser for this, which can be quite annoying.

I have since been pointed to Profimail trail version and it does a reasonable job of rendering html emails but it comes at a price, not free.

Something like this should be natively supported in 'smartphones'

Even the new trial/soon to pay for Nokia Messaging support for html email rendering is poor.

From what I have seen on the iPhone guided tour, the email supports Rich Text as well as html formatted emails natively.

If you have the iPhone, or other 'smartphone' can you feedback what your experiences with these types of emails look like, presentation compared to desktop client.

Examples would be BBC newsletter, IOL newsletter etc.

I understand that mails should be be plain text as originally designed, but getting the latest news with embedded images .... erm rather just say a picture paints a thousand words :)
