HTPC or Media Player

Also what are the boot times like?

MY old htpc took 1min to get into xbmc.

It plays HD great. It's quiet as a mouse - the external drive cases are noisy. Xbmc takes 5 seconds to start in win 7 - ubuntu was about 20 seconds. I only reboot the pc when an os update calls for it.

can you buy the revo new in RSA? Or online stores?

Gave up on the Mede8er.
Think I'll just get a new motherboard for my pc.
Was also looking at the HP Proliant micro server for R1100 + R400+ for graphics card but think the Blu Ray drive might use too much power on that server.

IMHO replace the mobo. You can do so much more with a PC than a media box. Also a full-on HTPC is way more powerful than a media box and will guarantee you full HD playback if you have the right equipment, could also be cheaper.

+1 Really depends on what you want out of it.

The HP Proliant is looking pretty good value for money at the moment, but still have to replace motherboard on the PC so that would be the best option.

Only thing is to play games I must move the pc to our office and then back again to serve as HTPC for viewing Movies and Series.
Don't really like playing games from the couch.............
Would be ideal if I could somehow leave the HTPC in my office +- 20m away from TV and stream everything to the TV........mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I have a Wireless N Router:

Can I connect the router to my xbox 360 via cat5 and then stream to it from HTPC in the office?

I see you can setup an xbox 360 as an extender and display Media Center on your TV.

Yes you can. I'm spending R2k on a HP Proliant server JUST to get XBMC functionality (and a NAS), but still, while you can use a PS3, XBOX etc as a player, nothing comes close to having a full-blown media pc.

Placed the HTPC in my office with Clean install of Win7 and added a Wireless N card.
Connected the xbox directly to a wireless N router via CAT6
Started up Media Center
Booted Xbox and connected to Media center.

Kudos to Microsoft for making it so easy.
Only issue I have is the Xbox fan is load.

Sounds good! Almost identical to my old setup, before I sold the Xbox.

You won't be able to solve your Xbox fan issue without voiding your warranty. If it's an old Xbox and warranty is kaput, I can ship you a new (and quieter) fan from a newer Xbox.

Still got 5 months left under warranty.
Doubt I'll stick with this setup anyway - it's a waste of electricity having to have both a PC and Xbox on at the same time especially nowadays in SA with prices increasing.

Just boil the kettle one time fewer a week and you would have saved the same amount of electricity that the setup will use over and aove other solutions.

where can i buy a ACER Revo in RSA? Or a similar mini pc that i can use as a HTPC
