I am completely in the dark. Our two student children needs wifi in Stellenbosch. Telkom is dragging its feet with the purchase of the mentioned routers on contract - been waiting for two week now...

Please advise on buying the router and the cost of adding databundles - seems like the databundles is a lot more expensive. Please also advise alternative options.

If you want a new one Takealot had then on sale for R1 499 this week. Most places sell them for R1 500 to R2 000. If you don't mind second hand, check the classifieds or post in the wanted forum, there are always people selling their routers on here.
 
The least expensive option is from Telkom ( Check coverage ) LTE
Get two 20 -20 Gb contracts they will give you two Routers one for each contract
The advantage of this is the routers can be moved to any place with coverage .
My contract ( October 2017 ) R 269.00 / month 24 months 20Gb and 20 Gb 12H00 to 07H00
Late night ideal for downloading software and or .
