Huawei B315s SSH and VPN

Hi guys,

I recently had to give up my ADSL account because it became impossible to rely on OpenServ to keep the line working for any extended period of time. I don't have fibre as an option, but fortunately MTN had recently put up a new tower which has made LTE (but not fixed LTE) available.

Last week I signed up and took a contract that includes a Huawei 315s router as part of the deal. And that's where the problems started. I have done some searching on the net and here on mybroadband, but I don't seem to be getting definitive answers on the following:

1. It looks like the router's DHCP cannot assign IP addresses based on client MAC address, correct?
2. I cannot SSH (or Telnet) to remote servers. Totally disabling the firewall doesn't even solve it, never mind trying to fiddle with "Special applications" setup. Am I missing something, or is there a way to get this working?
3. VPN works fine, but only for a few minutes, then it disconnects. Again, are there special settings required on the router and if so what?

I'm very disappointed with the router.

Are there solutions to my problems? Do I need another router? If so, can anyone recommend a decent one that will allow me to do the above? Is it perhaps not the router, but MTN that needs to relax some settings on my account?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Cheers.

Have you tried a factory reset and starting again?
I'm not sure how else DHCP would work without MAC addresses?

1. Yes, you can't receive IP addresses on the router according the devices MAC address. You can assign a static IP address to the device(s) that isn't part of the DHCP range.
Example: The routers DHCP range is 192.168.8.100-192.168.8.200 by default. So the static IP range you can use is 192.168.8.2-192.168.8.99 or 192.168.8.201-192.168.8.254.
For 2 and 3 I would recommend running a ping test to the remote server you want to access and the VPN you want to connect to.

If your old ADSL router can do all that you require, then continue to use it and connect the B315 to the WAN port of your old router.
