Can someone please shed some light on this issue. I'm currently having problems with the USB ports on my notebook when connect my Huawei E172 USB Stick modem. The PCpicks up the USB stick and then within a few seconds disconnects it, and then picks it up again, etc.

I've updated the service packs on the PC and going to update the USB drivers. Any other ideas?

P.S: All other USB sticks work fine and the Modem works fine on my home desktop.

What operating system are you using?

My first guess would be that the notebook cannot supply enough power through a single USB port, but I have seen on occasion that for some reason the modem is only detected as a mass storage device, and when the modem's installation program stored on the modem executes it resets the modem, resulting in the loop you describe above.

If you are using Windows XP, go to the device manager, locate the Huawei Mass Storage device, right-click on it then choose upgrade driver.
Don't let Windows go online, and with a bit of luck the device will be re-detected as USB Composite Device.

I'm running XP SP3.
As for the power option, it is a USB stick, but I'm gonna try source a dual input to test.

The device is detected as a USB Composite Device and Mass Storage Device. The problem I have is the modem device connects and disconnects every couple of seconds, so when I look at device manager I cannot get an opportunity to remove it, before it disconnects.

Had the exact same problem with my E172 - sent it to Vodaworld, but came back negative (they couldn't find anything wrong with it, of course) - it just randomly seemed to remove, then add, itself from my USB devices list. Only solution I found for this in the end, was to get an E272 (smooth sailing since then). :/

Fugglefeet posted about a hardware "patch" he found in the Huawei forum for stabilizing power on the USB port.
