HUAWEI E220 connected, no data though

My wife is using the above mentioned E220 for work purposes, however the thing never seems to work.

When you connect via the MTN 3G/HSDPA connection software, it connects all right, and receives a client IP, but there is no Server IP, which in my eyes indicates that there is no gateway ... this seems to be proven my the fact that nothing happens when it is connected .. no DNS resolution on any names, and you can't connect to anything.

Is this a common problem and is there a workaround/fix for it?
