Huawei E220 USB HSDPA Modem Connection Issues

Can somebody tell me what the significance is of the value 8 in the following command. AT+CGDCONT=8,"IP","internet";

The standard setup on the E220 "Vodafone" comes with this value set at 16. Somebody told me to set this value to 1. I have not tried this yet.

I used the standard software from Huawei to re-load the usb memory with the normal software and downloaded the full Vodafone Mobile Connect Version 7 SOftware. I am now using this combination it seems to work much better. It connects faster and connects everytime. The modem is using the following value AT+CGDCONT=8,"IP","internet";


I seem to have wiped the original software software/setup that comes with the E220 fom Vodacom. I hope this will not cause any problems.

I use my E220 with my 3G Preferred conection and it works every time i connect , i am happy til now.

Is it not the 8th profile being used?

If you're using the dashboard to connect don't worry about this setting. You would only need to change this if you connect straight from DUN.

Well since I have been using the full dashboard and being able to set 3G as the preferred connection it appears to be working much better. It also connects much quicker every time. This command ("AT+CGDCONT=8,"IP","internet" is part of the initialisation string for the modem ?? It is not an optional setting that can be chosen from anywhere ??. It must be pre-determined from somewhere & by somebody not true.??

AT+CGDCONT=8,"IP","internet"

mean store the 'internet' Access Point in slot 8 on the modem. You would use the 'dial-up' number *99***8# to use it.

Thanks Deenem it helps to understand. I can not get Hyperterm to work on the 3G USB Modem, but it looks like it can handle 16 slots. I dont know why Vodafone sets the default slot on the software/drivers they ship to 16 ?. Strange but true.
