So after plugging it in I get a cd drive icon for a moment but this then disappears after trying to install the software. I try to set up a connection but no modem is found. I was under the impression it can be used as a standard modem but all I get is a constant connection that I can't turn on or off apart from disabling it.

How do I setup a dial-up connection on this?
Also every time I plug it in for some reason it loads the router page which isn't needed.

I have a E5577 and I use it as a modem on my PC through USB. It's direct plug and play for me. If I don't want to use the modem I just remove the USB from the modem.

If I understand correctly, you want to leave it plugged in but don't want it to be active at all times?
I did that before with an older 3G USB stick modem but I forget how. I'll try again in the morning and see how it goes. I'd actually like to keep it that way also

Yep, only when dialling in. USB sticks aren't a problem they're recognised as a modem but the E5577 doesn't display a modem. Don't know if it's because I had an E220 and some or other ZTE installed as well before.

Oh stuff it! Now it decides to go to sleep when I actually need it most and I have to get up to wake it up. Also no way for me to check data balance. I'm just going to get another cheap USB stick for the pc and keep this one plugged in somewhere for the things that need WiFi. I don't see why they can't make an expensive device with all of the features of a cheap device or have the necessary drivers for it.

1. You can set the modem not to go to sleep from that login page that automatically comes up.
2. If you are using the MTN 50GB deal in the modem, download the MTN app on your phone and when you are connected to the modem you will be able to log into that sim via the app
3. And for your original question, I cant seem to get it to work. It picks up as an ethernet connection in the "network and sharing center". You can use a shortcut to get to the "change adapter settings" screen and enable and disable from there. That is how I switch between adsl and the lte modem

1. Tried to but only see a setting to set if to 120 minutes maximum. I sleep for longer than that so it means either keeping it plugged in or getting a power bank. Neither a good option when using the usb ethernet. I will check again if I missed anything obvious.
2. Fortunately/unfortunately on Cell C.
3. Seems from my research these Android devices don't have a PPP link. Apparently the conversion takes up most of the processing using most of the power. That just seems like a crap excuse to me as the only time when you can use it in any case is when it's plugged in and charging.

So there's 4 problems.
If I'm using wifi there's a constant trickle of data which was never so regular on dial up.
If I'm using usb there's some kind of constant communication which I can't seem to isolate on any monitoring device so usage isn't accurate.
In both cases the only way to disconnect and reconnect is to reset the device which takes the better part of a minute.

Ok seems there was two settings, one for the mobile connection and one for the wifi.

So apparently Huawei has implemented Hilink in most of their devices, including some HSPA modems. Some can be set to function in ppp dial-up or "stick mode."

I've figured out how to reset the connection but that resets it for everything including critical applications. So still need an extra stick for the pc. Now just need to find a way to check data balance. 14302 still doesn't work on Cell C.
