Matebook 14 Review
Huawei matebook 14 just landed on the South African shores and I am privileged to have one in my possession. This is my first experience with the Huawei Matebook since they ventured into the laptop landscape and am pretty excited to experience the Matebook.
Right out of the box the mate space grey top screams cool with the glossy Huawei logo standing out. The outward design is great and as you turn the Matebook 14 over you will see the fan grill for the cooling fans, two speaker outputs and also the rubber strips for grip when placed on the desk or works station. You also have the windows 10 sticker that indicates the pre installed operating system on the Huawei Matebook 14. As you turn the laptop around you will notice on the side the type c port that doubles as a charging port as well as the Hdmi port and on the other side is two USB ports.

Out of the box the Huawei Matebook 14 comes with the type c charging cable, a 66w fast charging brick and a user manual. When open the laptop you are met with a 14inch screen that has a 90% body to screen ratio 2k full view display. The screen resolution is an impressive 2160X1440 and it is touch screen capable. Like it's predecessors and high end stable mates the Huawei Matebook x and the Huawei Matebook X pro the Matebook 14 is turned on by a power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner for logging into your laptop. You can also set up a log in pin for added security and speaking of security you don't have to worry about Webcam spying as Huawei has retained the pop up camera under the key on the keyboard that you open only when you need to use and press back down when not in use. The initial set up is straight forward with voice assistance for the visually Impaired users ready to assist from the moment you turn on your laptop.

Under the hood the Huawei Matebook 14 has 16GB of RAM and 512GB NVMe PCOe SSD coupled with a 11th Gen i7 processor. The graphics are smooth and and run by Intel
Iris
Xe Graphics card the same graphics card on the higher end Huawei Matebook X pro. Speaking of graphics the laptop handles pc games quite well but does not fair very well with heavier video editing softwares that produce 8k videos. The Huawei Matebook 14 has built in sensors that continually monitor the laptop heat and as you work or play the silent shark fin fans under the device kick in at the right moment to keep the laptop cool and running at the right temperature without the buzzing or irritating sound of a fan.

So far there are few pros and cons that's I have picked up in relation to the new Huawei Matebook 14 and below are my observations from the few days I have used the Matebook 14.
Pros
>The laptop is light weight and very portable at 1,49kgs
>The type c to type c charger can be used to charged other Huawei devices like my Huawei P40 Pro.
>The battrey life is good averages about 10hrs on a full charge and it's also supported by the 65w fast charger and it supports reverse charging
>Support Huawei Share and multi screen collaboration with supported Huawei devices
>Backlit keyboard enables me to work even in low light environments
>Supports WiFi 6
>Touch screen and air gesture screen shot enabled
>Rheinland low blue light Certified for protection of the eyes for people who spend more time on the laptop
>Windows 10 pre installed
Cons
>The 3:2 aspect ratio display is a disadvantage when you watch wide content like videos or Netflix you will note the black bar at the top and bottom.
>The 2k display is outplayed by other compatitors on its range but it's not a bad display
>Priced at R24 999 feels like a lot for an average user but certainly not for corporates who seem to be the target market for the Matebook 14
>The web cam angle is a bit if a turn off as it stares directly into one's nasal openings instead of the traditional potriat of other webcams
My Verdict
So far from my experience the pros definately out weigh the cons, the Huawei Matebook 14 is a good buy and a pleasure to use. I would recommend it for professional who want an everyday laptop that gives you a balance between work and play with good battrey life considering eskom is moody. Huawei Matebooks are becoming more popular in the South African market evidenced by the high demand on the Huawei Store with stock currently constrained an issue that I am hoping Huawei is addressing and more laptops should be available any day from now. Its love at first sight from my side and as weeks go by be sure to look out for my long term review of the Huawei Matebook 14 from me.
