So I took delivery of the gorgeous Icy White Huawei GT 2e last week Thursday and have been using it as my main smart watch since.
So far I have been very happy using it on both a Huawei P40 Lite and iPhone 11 Pro Max, I am also going to try it on my old Samsung Galaxy Note8 to see how it goes, but from what I have seen with the current 2 phones it does a splendid job.
To use it on these devices all you need is the Huawei Health App, on the app go to Devices - and Add the GT 2e, the setup is pretty quick and fast, I like that I can use it on different platforms.
First off let’s start with the Design
The GT 2e borrows a lot from its older brother the GT2:
Screen: Round 46mm 454x454 (326ppi) screen, that is incredibly bright and sharp.
The screen has been great for displaying WhatsApp texts and bits of Outlook emails as I receive them, it certainly has done a better job than my Apple Watch Series 3 (42mm) in this regard, the brightness and higher PPI really make this a pleasure to look at and use.
The body is nice and light despite being a stainless steel frame and glass face it does have a plastic under side which I think has helped keep the weight down, I tend to forget I have it on until I raise my hand and see the large face with the white straps, although I tend to be more into darker colours I must say this combination is working great for me, it looks like a luxury item, kind of reminiscent of higher end timepieces that are out of my budget.
Another thing I like is the charging plate which is large and super magnetic, it just takes some getting used to as it seems it wants you to set it in a specific manner otherwise you can feel the magnets repelling each other if it’s not happy with how you are setting it down.
Next up is Notifications
The GT 2e has been great at this, I often worry about cross platform situations hence I was really eager to test this with an iOS device. The result? Pure joy at the consistency and reliability of how this integrates with another platform, bravo Huawei, especially considering that it captures notifications from apps that it doesn’t have. For example I was wondering how good it would be when it comes to Outlook for my work emails and calendar reminders and I am happy to report all notifications are coming in just fine
Here is an example below of a WhatsApp I need to read as well as a Outlook calendar invite being accepted. It also vibrates well and strongly enough for me to know something has come through but not enough to annoy me.
Battery Life...
To be quite frank? It delivers what it says on the tin, long battery life.
It has been almost a week and here I am on Wednesday night (got the Watch last week Thursday) and it is sitting at 46%....granted I have been on the side of Lockdown that is NOT gyming (it is cold and I could not be bothered to gym right now, bleehhh
)
So I still need to stretch it’s legs on the exercise front, also note with me working at home I have not really had much use for the Stand By (always on display) setup, I literally took the watch out the box and set the face I wanted and just started using it as is, so in an update to this review I will detail my experience with the Stand By On
The Kirin A1 chip simply sips power...
I did however have a quick look see at the Stand By faces and I really like this one:
You can also setup how long you want the screen to stay lit up
There is quite a bit to customize and go wild with but it seems you are limited to what is on the watch, I am still going to explore this though, so keep an eye on this thread as I do need to delve a little deeper when I have more time to tinker with it.
What is the difference between Watch GT 2 and GT 2e?
The GT 2e has had the Loudspeaker removed and has slightly larger bezels with a more sporty look overall. I do wish it had a speaker as sometimes one prefers sound over the vibrations. The GT 2e seems to be targeted at a younger audience that is more exercise focused, the straps are more ventilated and it looks less “retro” in its design versus the GT2.
Here is a nice video of the Watches overall to:
Conclusion & Price
Overall I am very happy with this watch, it has really gone above my expectations and is a great all rounder especially for the price of just R3499:
Huawei have a great deal on these on their online store:
