Ok, so we are back to the issue around my 8Gb zip while (which I managed to extract successfully at last). Unzipped it is around 12Gb of data. Now I don't want to keep it on my MBP HDD, as I don't often refer to the data contained.

What is the best way to get the 12Gb onto multiple DVDs?

Get a Lacie External USB Harddisk drive and keep it on there. Then you can at least use it when ever you want to instead of all the DVD's. I use 2 of them and it work well.

I have an external drive (100Gb), but that hosts a multitude of Windows files, as well as 2 VMs. I won't go for a bigger drive, as that will most probably mean 3.5", which means external power supply ... currently have the 2.5" powered by USB. The cost for a bigger 2.5" is not justified for files I access every now and again

Well, its either spanning it, or just group the data in groups of 4Gb :D
Everytime we get rid of a laptop I pull it's hard drive just for uses like this. Pop it in an external case, copy it over, pull it, label it and file it away.

EDIT - I also have a large chunk of my 60gb Photo iPod set aside for file storage.
