Okay what the business is going on here:

Over the last week or so my phone has totally gone mad using data.... Suddenly it just starts downloading like crazy.

I have no airtime left because the phone just downloaded stuff and over the past 2 days, on WiFi without me knowing it's used 1.75GB, all attributed to 'Google Services' and all background data....

Does my phone have a virus or something? It's never done this before and the setting haven't changed. I have now turned off background services and data otherwise any airtime I put in is just used up in a couple of minutes.

Please help are there gremlins in the phone?!?

Its in situations like this that you should be grateful that you dont use a VodaScum contract to connect...

That doesnt sound like normal sync. Normally I would think its something like google+ trying to upload all of you pics but you say it isnt installed. Root it and install an app firewall!

Try avast mobile or something with a firewall and adjust the firewall settings accordingly to only allow the apps you want to. I found that Microsoft exchange used a lot of data.

Dropbox auto-saving your photos to your account perhaps. That happened to me, but I discovered it very quickly luckily.

Don't have dropbox...

When I go into the usage under 'Google Services' it says:

Google Accounts Manager
Google Bookmarks Sync
Google Services Framework
Google Contacts Sync
Google Play Services
Network Location

Network location and all syncs are turned off :/

If it's google services, it may be the android 4.3 download starting and failing. I got hit with the OOB shark when my phone automatically downloaded the 4.3 update.
