Huge R60 K bill while roaming on MTN

Good tip - I'll keep this in mind. I was just about to take my phone with to Europe, but phone bill alone in one month in SA is like 1k - calls and emails and such. will def be using prepaid Sim then :P Are they easy to come by in Europe?

By now people should be aware of the dangers of roaming - and they should rather be using prepaid SIM's from the country they're in, instead of their own contract SIM's.

Should be easy to come by overseas.
 
it never ceases to amaze me how much companies will rip you off for moving 1's and 0's around

That's what i did for 3 weeks over xmas, was in the UK.

Out of interest i looked at data charges to botswana as they are ''next-door'' even there the charges are R2.60 per kB. Add that up to just 1MB..... :eek:

so yeah i can understand the dude's 60k bill...

Sims are easy to get there. You'll need one per country you go too though...
 
hmmm...

go to another country and pay R300 per itty bitty megabyte,

or buy a sim somewhere and get free gigs for like 10 pounds





tough choice.
 
I can't understand why people still get nailed by this in this day and age. Surely everybody and their dog knows by now about the high roaming costs?

I can quite easily see a person who has bought an android phone, for instance, and has their facebook, twitter etc set to update every so often having an issue without ever realising the trouble they are getting themselves into. Or using the gps on their phone.

Your normal phone user may not be aware of the data component of their phone.
 
So what have we learned from this? Cell phone contracts are just another means for providers to screw you over. This is just another thing that should be outlawed when the Consumer Protection Act kicks in.
 
If you look on their website under roaming charges you'll see that data while roaming gets charged in units of 25kb. Translate that into a MB and you are paying well over a 100 rand per meg!

Come on, chaps. Do we really need another law enforced by police with guns to solve this problem?! Freedom too much to handle? Can't cope with all the choices the free market offers? Then don't participate. But for heaven's sake keep the police out of it! Even more stupid than roaming data is calling for a tyranny to solve these problems. It's thinking like this that voted Hitler into power. We need less government, not more.

we can look to cut other government interference. consumer protection should not be one of those areas.

even the countries you would use to benchmark us with have their governments active in consumer protection.
 
I've just been reading an article in a UK magazine explaining that since the middle of 2010, all the major operators there have now set caps on data roaming charges (mainly in the EU) of around 50 euros (about R500) a month; operators have to remind you when you hit about 80% of that, and cap you when you hit the limit unless you specifically arrange otherwise.

SA is said to be so advanced in our cellphone market; surely that wouldn't be difficult to implement here?
