WordPress version 5.5 is coming very soon. According to WordPress.org, it’s scheduled to launch on 11 August 2020. Click here to view the development cycle.

How to get the beta version?

Take note that WordPress version 5.5 has not yet been released but there’s a beta version available for you to test and play around with. To get the beta version you have to install a plugin called “WordPress Beta Tester” after you have installed the plugin navigate to the Tools > Beta Testing. You want to choose the option “Bleeding edge nighties” and finally navigate to the Dashboard > Updates and click on Update Now.

WordPress 5.5 will be the second major release of 2020; Here's what you can expect from the update:

1. Block editor

The block editor is now more like a page builder. There have been some major improvements to the WordPress block editor, most importantly it’s now extremely fast! Have a look at this speed results from WPCrafter.com

This website has no caching plugin enabled “basically out of the box performance” and is build using only the Gutenberg block editor and was tested using the Kadance WordPress theme. The theme is Free!

2. Automated plugin & theme updates

You will now be able to automatically update your WordPress plugins and themes with WordPress version 5.5 this is awesome since it will keep your website updated and secure, you can read more about securing your WordPress website here.

3. Native XML sitemaps

The Sitemaps protocol allows a webmaster to inform search engines about URLs on a website that are available for crawling. A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. This feature has now been built into WordPress version 5.5, you usually need an extra SEO plugin like RankMath or Yoast SEO to achieve this.

4. Lazy loading images (Finally)

Lazy loading images will now be built into WordPress version 5.5 and could offer quite a performance boost. The only way you can achieve this with older versions of WordPress was to install a plugin but this feature was usually only available on the premium version of the selected plugin, now we get it for free built-in. There are a lot more things you can do to make your website faster, click here to read more!

5. UI Improvements

The block builder user interface has also now been improved. A lot of the icons have been redone and there is a lot of refinement within the interface. One of the big improvements is “Device Preview” the block builder now has the option to preview your website on Desktop, Tablet and Mobile (This is still in beta and will be working better once released)

6. Inline image editor

The page builder now has a better “improved” image editor with a few more features than the default one. The image crop has been improved, you can now change the orientation of the image within WordPress “Landscape, Portrait”

Right now this is all that we know about WordPress version 5.5 you can view more information directly from WordPress.org https://make.wordpress.org/core/5-5/

What do you think?

I feel like this version of WordPress (5.5) will have dramatic speed improvements considering the above screenshot of the performance report. I feel like there has been a lot of “bloat” removed as well. What do you think about WordPress 5.5?

Special thanks to WPCrafters for giving us the info: in-depth review

This is good news for those that want to use free tools to create a simple website. All of the information is out there to learn how to do it yourself, or alternatively, you can still contract a freelancer or agency to build something more advanced on the same platform. The only problem has been Gutenberg's usability, but this update should make some vast improvements.

Yup, I’ve been using Elementor to build my pages, hopefully in the future updates of WordPress they can make Gutenberg more like that.

It seems that with this new update (5.5) they have managed to make it similar to a page builder but still lacks a lot of functionality. But at least this is a start to possibly something great.
