Where can I get one? Does clicks have one?

Yesterday my nose (the inside of my nose) started feeling really dry and bunged up. I put a bowl of water in front of my heater for a while last night (I turn the heater off before I go to sleep), but this morning I noticed it didnt look like that much of it had evaporated.

I mean, now it seems I may be actually getting sick, my question is, would a humidifer help, and do Clicks sell them?

Get one from just about any chemist.

Try the new cold mist versions, better than the old humidifiers.

Cool, I'll have a look. I think the local clicks can give prescription medication, so they might even have one.

Otherwise the only other chemist I can think of is at the NHC medical centre. Hmmm.

Be a bit careful with humidifiers though, especially if your place is well sealed. If you get don't have enough air circulation going, the moisture will provide the fuel required for mould to start growing.

My windows are always at least partially open, hopefully that will prevent it from being a problem.

we got a carmen ultrasonic (cool air) humidifier from Dischem- under R600. its great, but as the others have said be carefull for mould growth especially if you allergic to it. keep windows open during daytime and clean walls and ceilings regularly with bleach (Jik).

another alternative is to get that russel hobbs fan with mist humidifier (about a R1000), let it run on low (will not make room cold) behind the heater to provide moist to the air

Alternatlively just use an old kettle to boil in the room for a few minutes every few hours - will provide great steam in the room, but be carefull not to burn.

Those with humidifiers, do you find it helps your nose?

The one I have has a setting where you set the level of humidity you want. I use it mainly to counter the fan heater I'm using as that dries the air a bit. Lips/skin feeling rather dry lately so I've started using it whenever the heater is on, which is basically whenever we are home and awake. Does help a bit with throat/mouth/sinuses, feel better when waking up after using it.

I bought a rather basic one from clicks for R250. Doesnt allow you to set the level of humidity, oh well.

i just use those nose spray things twice a day.... it just has saline in it so cleans your nose and keeps its moist.

Try a metal bowl on top of the heater.

Dischem has many options. The baby shops all have good options to.

It is generally accepted that the steam humidifiers are not healthy but ultrasonic is better.

The humidifiers definitely do help for dry skin and the air passages during winter nights.
Just remember to open your windows during the day when it is warmer to let the air circulate.

No

A humidifier is used when you have a chest infection/asthma and your struggling to breath. We only use ours when either my son or I have chest problems.

With regards to which one, we bought the cheapest one from Discem and it works 100% - the more expensive ones do not work any better than ours.

EDIT: We are in the Western Cape and have wet winters so my experience with regards to a humidifier is not the same as up country.

? Explain please ?

If its so unhealthy then both my sons paediatricians and GP would never have recommended one.

Honestly I don't have all the material any more but a Google search should yield some information and you can make your own decision.

The gist of my research was as follows; steam humidifiers encourage bacteria growth because they are so warm. If you use one then clean it out daily and use something like Milton to clean it regularly. An ultrasonic humidifier does not filter out solutes and bacteria can also grow in them but to a lesser extent. An evaporative humidifier is best because the water is filtered as it evaporates. Since I have not been able to buy the latter anywhere in South Africa I use an ultrasonic humidifier.

I bought an ultrasonic one at 499 for my two year old daughter from dischem and its really helping. I did a bit of research and I found out that the ultrasonic was the best for kids as it doesn't heat.
