When i got home from work this afternoon I saw that my dog's (miniature dachshund) lip has swollen up pretty badly on the one side. At first I thought it was a bee-sting or some other bug, but I couldn't find any marks or nicks on his lip. The inside of his lip is a dark red colour so it looks like it might be a bruise. He seems OK and is eating, but I think I'll take him to the vet tomorrow.

I've got a suspicion that it might be someone from the garden services that maybe kicked or hit him since they were the only ones who were at my house today. But unfortunately I obviously cannot prove it.

I think it is time to cancel the garden services (I had other issues with them as well)...

pretty bad,hope he heals.

Someone shot my German shepheard with a painball gun this week, the yard was full of paintballs.

if it is the garden service, i'd like to kick their damn faces in myself

please, tjiPPi, before you cancel their contract, do the following...

1) take a pic of the dog now (before the swelling goes down). send it to the company concerned, together with a politely worded letter of complaint and a copy of your vet's bill, and demand they refund every cent. please do this, whether you can afford the bills or not. also warn them that failure to pay (and investigate on their side), will result in you taking legal action.

2) take copies of the pic and all these docs to your local police station and lay a charge of damage to property. in terms of SA law, animals are property, therefore you CAN do so. and, please, ignore anyone that tells you it's a waste of police resources, etc.

3) ensure the police investigate, follow-up until you are sure they have questioned the co. owner.

doing this will, hopefully, make this particular garden service owner more aware of the type of people s/he employs, and prevent the same thing happening to other animals in future.

And about those paintball shooters, I am no big animal lover myself, but it's time to find out who, and make sure you get them back...my weapon of choice would be a paintball gun of course....just make sure they are wearing their most expensive clothes. There is no excuses for harming living creatures!

ja, i was going to say, you should perhaps do the same, deadcore, but without having any idea as to who the culprit is, it may be a bit trickier for you.

poor dogs... please give them a big (gentle) hug from me.

Thanks for the advice sincerious. I will most definitely do this. I already took a picture of his lip.

I am sick and tired of people hurting defenseless animals:mad:

DeadCore, I hope you find the people who did it.

well done on being pro-active and protective of your pet/s, and their rights! :)

Perhaps it wasnt anything nefarious. My cat had some allergic reaction which made his lip swell like a baloon - vet wasn't sure what caused it but some antihistamines sorted it right out.

Wait and hear what the vet says before planning your vengeance.

@DeadCore - hope your dog is ok. :o

What happens sometimes is stones shoot up from under a lawn mower. I love dogs, especially mine, and wouldn't hurt them on purpose. This happened to my dog from me cutting the grass.

Accidents happen, and they may not even know they hurt your dog.

Anyway, I hope your dogs heals soon :)

he is ok but it irritates him and he has begun to chew or nibble on it,will have to get him one of those things that you put around a dogs head so they can't chew themselves.

Wait and hear what the vet says before [-]planning your vengeance[/-] taking steps to ensure these guys are more careful with their paying customers' pets.

you are correct, bwana, i should have been clearer on that point and advised tjiPPi to proceed only if/when his vet has confirmed the cause of the bruising.
btw, please note, i have taken the liberty of amending your post as it made mine seem vindictive, which it ain't :p

true, but a decent garden service would and should ensure their customers' pets are out of the way prior to proceeding with their work. they should also notice if/when a pet is hurt during the course of doing their job and, at least, advise the pet-owner accordingly.

did the paint make direct contact with his/her skin? if so, have you tried getting it off? if yes, what did you use and did it all come off?

i assume this paint is non-toxic to humans, so it should not be harmful to your dog, but you never know, so rather just take your dog to a vet for a quick check-up, DeadCore. for all you know s/he could've have had a pre-existing skin condition, which has become worse since the paint attack.

nb. putting a victorian collar on a dog that has even a mildly irritated skin, and not treating the condition, will drive the poor dog insane and could lead to more vet bills. it could also result in excessive barking/whining while you're not home, which could lead to another attack by those paint-ball shooting idiots.

btw, you could also ask the local SPCA or AACL if they'd be willing to give your dog a quick check-up (while you report the "shooting" incident to them). they usually (and rightfully so) only assist the underpriviliged, but take a chance and see what happens. and, no matter where you end up taking your dog for a check-up, please make sure you report the "shooting" to the SPCA - they may have had other reports and know who the culprit is.

ok, i hope all of that makes sense... it's time for bed for me! :D

His lip was still swollen this morning so I will take him to the vet today. I also decided that I will wait to hear what the vet says before taking it further.

Thanks again for all the help guys - it is really appreciated!

there is s small holl in his skin and he has chewed most of his hir out of that area,i think he might have been shot by an airsoft gun because i don't think a paintball can do that kind of damage.

will try and get some pics on later today.

jeez, get the poor dog to a vet today, DeadCore!
how would you feel having an itching, painful hole on your body?

by not getting the dog the veterinary attention it needs, you are just as bad as those who abuse animals.

I have an appointment with the vet on friday,i applied some disinfectant earlier today in the meantime.

Very good, the vet shaved some of the fur of so he can get a closer look at the damage, turns out it wasn't so bad.

great news, deadcore!
glad to hear your dog is ok :)

if you haven't yet done so, don't forget to report the incident to the SPCA - just so they have a record of it.
