Hi

Just bought this used car for my dad..2012 model

The steering feels funny ...almost moves by itself!
I dont know if its the alignment or a suspension problem...car apparently was not in an accident according to dealer (how to confirm this)

Anyone else with this issue?

What are you doing when this happens? I'm assuming this doesn't happen when you are stationary?

During low speed town driving. Haven't taken the car on a freeway yet.
Steering feels "disconnected" from the road

The steering on the Accent does feel quite "light". This is mainly due to the electronic power steering (vs hydrolic). It shouldn't be that bad though.

Send it for an AA checkup. It's worth it for piece of mind.

If you're on a straight road and let go of the steering wheel does it do this? As mentioned it could just be that the power assisted steering is sensitive.

Light steering's one thing, steering that feels disconnected is quite another; the latter implies that the car does not react perfectly to steering inputs. Worn bushes and connectors on a steering system can give you that sensation, but nothing should be worn on a year-old car, which means something might be loose rather than worn. Of course it could simply be a slightly exaggerated description of poor alignment...

Take it to your nearest tyre fitment shop and have the alignment checked out - shouldn't cost you more than R200, and hopefully a fair bit less. Ask them to check the suspension for any obvious play, you can plan your next move according to what they find.

Most any person at a decent used car lot will be able to tell you whether there has been major repair work done on the car.

They are all like that. There is 2 settings that the dealer can change it to.
Yours is probably on the "Seoul Taxi Driver" setting. Get them to change it to the "European" one.

Bought a brand new Elantra last year with same problem. Took it in for its 15k service and they replaced a few things with relation to the steering. I also noticed the steering issue after I got the car, and it's not a local issue, its world wide. With the service they replaced everything for free.
