I'm considering buying one because at that price point R200 000, its the only car I could find with all the bells and whistles.

VW and Toyota out due to high risk of theft (I stay in very high risk area).
Looking at a 7-8 year life before sale.

Nice features but I find it quite plain, almost unnoticeable.

Hyundai are mechanically sound and resale is not as bad as it used to be but I have a feeling the i30 will not fetch too much second hand as there is very low demand.

Heh, am also looking at this car, doesn't appear to be too bad for the price bracket. Not worried about resale value, as I don't consider cars an investment.

Very understated car - cheaper than the main rivals (Golf and Astra) - if you can buy one, do it.

For the price I have to say its a nice car.

my brother recently bought one and it seems really decent, has a lot more to offer than the others in its price bracket.

i30 is great IMO, I bought the i20 as wasn't willing to stretch he budget.

For R200k or under i30 or cerato

Elantra is will be around the same price as the i30, any higher and its approaching the Sonata territory (also a bargain).

The i30 2.0 was a bit underpowered and I didn't like the styling. I bought the Cerato 2.0 SX sedan instead.
The Cerato engine puts out 10kW more power than the Hyundai engine (Hyundai engine has no variable valve timing like the Kia) and can comfortably seat four 6 foot adults with enough boot space for lots of luggage.
I'm really happy and plan to keep the vehicle for 10 years or 250,000km or until it falls apart.
