Why do alternate-fuel cars always need to be ugly? I understand that they are different and perhaps need to stand out...but not so much. The Golf doesn't look too bad compared to the others.

The Hyundai Ioniq plug-in (PHEV) model will be the third and final variant of the electrified hatchback range to go on sale when order books open on the 13 July.
Priced from £24,995, the Ioniq PHEV slots between the hybrid and fully electric versions that are already on sale, priced from £20,585 and £29,495 respectively.
The Ioniq is Hyundai's first dedicated hybrid and full-electric model and also the first car from any manufacturer to be offered with three electric powertrain options within a single body type.

Should I buy one?
In today’s world, the plug-in hybrid Ioniq is arguably the most complete car of its three-model family, appearing best suited to this transition period from combustion engine to electric. It certainly gives the Toyota Prius plug-in a run for its money, but initial impressions still suggest the Prius will appeal more for those after maximum mileage.
Then there’s the Volkswagen Golf GTE, which remains the pick of the class but only for those able to stretch to its £30,635 asking price. It lacks the lengthy standard specs list of the Hyundai, meaning those who prioritise value for money over all else will find the Ioniq plug-in impossible to ignore. But the Hyundai’s shortfalls mean the GTE undoubtedly remains the most rounded plug-in in this segment.

And the Women’s World Car of the Year for 2017 is
The Women’s World Car of the Year awards have been handed out across six segments, with the Hyundai Ioniq bagging the overall prize, being handed the title from 2016 winner, the Jaguar F-Pace.
The Ioniq – which is offered in electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid form in Europe – also claimed the Green Car award.
The Mazda CX-5 ended up top in the Family Car category (edging out the Hyundai i30), and finished second overall. The Ford Fiesta scored the Budget Car win, with the Kia Rio taking second and the Citroën C3 third.
The SUV/Crossover award went to the Peugeot 3008 (ahead of the aforementioned CX-5 and Volvo XC60), while the BMW 5 Series took the Luxury Car prize, finishing in front of the Volvo S90 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The Honda Civic Type R grabbed the Performance Car title after a close-fought battle with the Mazda MX-5 RF, with the BMW M2 completing the podium. Lastly, the McLaren 720S claimed the Dream Car win.
The jury comprised 25 female motoring journalists from 20 different countries. Initially, the jury nominated 420 cars before whittling this list down to 60. Members then voted by secret ballot, allocating points to each contender.
Overall winner: Hyundai Ioniq

Extended range for electric Ioniq while all variants get revised styling and uprated interior technology
Hyundai has unveiled a refreshed version of its Ioniq family hatchback with a range of performance, technological and styling updates across the range.
The Toyota Prius rival now offers 182 miles of WLTP-certified range in fully electric form, marking a 36% improvement over the range of the outgoing 28kWh model. It’s still around 100 miles less than the currently sold-out Kona Electric, however.
The Ioniq Electric’s 38.3kWh battery pack is mated to an electric motor producing 134bhp and 218lb ft of torque, and is fitted with a new 7.2kW onboard charger compatible with Type 2 AC charging points.
Hyundai claims the facelifted EV can be charged to 80% capacity in as little as 54 minutes as a result. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain variants are unchanged, but the latter now has a WLTP target electric range of 32 miles.

It’s a handsome, capable and well-equipped machine, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid. Plus it’s got a class-competitive electric range, a roomy and smartly styled cabin and an infotainment system that no longer lags behind the rest.
Yet while it handles deftly enough, the powertrain still doesn’t feel as well resolved as that used in a Toyota Prius Plug-in; the dim-witted gearbox and obtrusive internal combustion engine are the worst offenders here.
The Toyota still shades the Ioniq dynamically, but if Hyundai doesn’t charge much more than the £28,395 it asks for the current version, the Ioniq’s flaws will be easily overlooked in return for the near-£4000 saving it delivers over its rival.
