Good day all,

About 6 month ago I subscribed to the Telkom R399 package, where they give you a router + 3G dongle.

I was told that for the 3G dongle I have 100 meg a month, for one or two years, can't recall.

I have currently problems with my router, and for the first time used the 3G dongle to connect. This worked immediately after I plugged it in, and installed, and connected.

My question is, why did it work without me having to setup my login and password information first ? When I look at the Connection Configuration on the D-Link Connection Manager, it says : APN : internet. Access Number : *99#. There is a username + password, but there is no info populated here. I would expect to add my login information there.

So, how does Telkom control the login, and know who is connecting, or did they set this information up against my profile against the dongle, when I got it ?

Can anyone explain to me how this works ?

Txs for any help.

The dongle has a SIM card in it, that SIM card has all the relevant subscriber info, linking it to your MSISDN (your number).

So your mobile number has an account, with a data bundle on it. Thats all they need to "grant" access. It works differently from ADSL, authentication is done using the SIM "credentials"

You dont need a username and password for a sim card, because the SIM card is your username and password! The SIM is unique and contains the identifiers the network needs to authenticate you. The mobile operator keeps a record of how much data is left on your account.

For an ADSL ISP, you can connect from any computer. Which is why you need a username and password - there is no other way for the ISP to know who you are until you enter your username and password.

Oh, and by the way. The dongle completely circumvents the router, probably only using the ports and power. So it works independently of the modem.

Txs Mac, I completely forgot there is a Sim card in it.

Txs for your help.
