I've had the same problem for almost 2 years now - intermittent DSL sync issues.

Basically, the DSL light on Billion 800VGT modem I'm using starts flashing yellow/orange for around a minute then becomes stable orange again. Obviously while this happens I have no connectivity. This may happen 15-20 times a day or not at all for 2 days in a row.

I've reported it to Telkom (which is also my ISP) more times than I can remember. Technician after technician have tried their luck but no cigar. I work from home which makes it worse. You can guess the frustration I have when I phone 0800 375 375 to report the fault, they test the line, and THEN it syncs! Put the phone line and the blinking light starts blinking again! :confused:

Any ideas clever people?
 
What are your stats - snr and attenuation?
 
...had returned 6 of these Telkom branded Billion modems in the past year (also several Netgear Telkom branded units); as there were several batches where the Telkom firmware was faulty.

My advice would be, never purchase a modem from an ISP, they seem to be rather poor software / hardware designers.

Check PriceCheck.co.za and search for any Netgear modem and I will supply it below that cost, excluding delivery. Delivery should be in the region of R 65.00 - R 125.00, depending on your location.

Can you please try something for me? Every time your line is stops to sync, pick up your home telephone and give your cellphone a missed call. I've had similar issues with my line, and using the telephone seems to somehow get the line to sync. Which is obviously why it syncs when you are on the phone with Telkom.

In my case, I'm pretty sure the issue is with the little round box sitting on the pole outside my house. One Telkom tech guy told me that water may leak in and cause the copper to rust. This pretty much happens every year.

I will try a new microfilter if the problem is not sorted out by the Telkom tech.

I found this on my modem:
SNR Margin 16.0 dB 1.2 dB
Line Attenuation 62.0 dB 31.5 dB
CRC Errors 0 0
Latency Fast Fast

Also, the "phone my cell" thing. I can actually hear a strange data (fax) sound on my line when the modem loses syn.
