I got a server cabinet, where do I get the racks?

I got a rather large server case over the weekend. I thought it was MUCH smaller when I bid on it, but when I went to collect it almost didn't fit in my car.


So I would like to move my media centre and one or two other computers I have floating around into it. The question is, where do I get the actual racks? It has a couple of shelves in it, so I could just put the boxes on top of these, but I like the idea of using racks.

Second hand stuff would be perfect, if I can find it. All the stuff I can find is really fancy stuff costing more than 2 grand (a grand more than I paid for the whole cabinet).

Usually, rack mount servers have rails that you bolt onto the square holes on the sides and back.
 
Yes, the racks are the expensive part.

I assume you want to repack your current pc's in to those server racks ? Remember they are low profile and have special flat PSU's.

Easier to just put your PS'c with their current cases on those shelves. Look for someone throwing out old rackmount servers that you can strip, replace as you get.

Even better would be to get some guy who can cut custom rack cases for you that fit your hardware, remember your high profile GPU wont fit in those standard rackmount cases.

or rackmountable tower case.

lian li and intel have, they cost about R2500 i think, just the chassis, or was that when i looked last. tower case thats 4U rackmountable when on its side, rails included.

Ok, I suspected something like this. My current media server is in one of those huge coolermaster efforts. It wont fit in as is. I'll have to make my own racks then.

I have a CNC Router so I can cut them myself. I think a combination of plyboard and aluminum will work.

I'll just have to get some rails. Could I use drawer rails?

Those devices were probably not designed to have rails & fit into a 19" rack. Just use the shelves.

Those are complete servers. I wouldnt mind one or two of those, tho I would only be able to afford the cheap ones and I'm not even sure what I could do with them. I've only ever really worked with desktop pc's so I'm not even sure I understand all those specs.

What I'm wanting is the cases, not so much the hardware inside.

I think I'll just make some custom cases that will take my current hardware and put them on shelves.

I have quite a large media server and its in the way. Its also a bit of a mess, with drives jammed in everywhere.
This cabinet takes as much space as the big shelving unit the server is on at the moment, and this looks neater, its better cooled, and because I got it for next to nothing (tho I did think it was MUCH smaller when I bought it).

The next thing I need to set up is a proxy because my kids are getting to a curious stage and I don't really have any internet filters atm. A small rack server would be perfect for that, and considering I can get a second hand one for a grand (as in koeks link) thats much more space effective than having yet another pc box cluttering up my space.

And lastly if I want to achieve my empire streaming pirated porn I have to start somewhere. Punani-junction.za.net - Remember that name!

Maybe you could look into silent computing as well.

This is something I'd be very interested in myself. I rarely ever use a DVD drive, and having complete silence while working would be nice.
