I have 2 four input ADSL routers and 5 computers.

Can I connect all the PC's to the network with this, and if so, how?

Are the routers used to connect to the internet or do have some sort of central storage etc. also.
Are the routers only wired?
How far are the pc's from each other?

Yes. Plug a crossover cable from one of the switches to the other, and then plug your pcs into the remaining ports.

Not ideal, I'd rather buy a small 8 port switch, but it'll work.

One router used to connect, there is an extra computer all of a sudden, so I wondered if I could patch together a solution with what I have available.

All wired.
 
Try a normal cable first before buying a cross-over, a lot of the new routers can auto-cross the ports.

Usually to daisy chain (slightly to moderately modern) switches, you don't even need a crossover cable. In this instance, you would only be using the switching function of the all-in-one.

Have you tried with a regular CAT5/6 fly-lead?

I have a similar setup and a normal lan cable works fine . The second router has wifi and covers most of the house for use with the tablets.

1) Connect the two routers together with separate IPs (192.168.0.254 and 192.168.0.253)
2) Disable DHCP on the second router, configure the DHCP address pool on the first one to use the available addresses from 11-200
3) Any computers that have shared folders or printers need a set IP, so use one of the open addresses from 1-10
4) Connect up the other computers, set them to DHCP
5) ??????
6) Profit!

Note that some routers may not forward DNS requests if they're connected to another router. In this case the second router might have a mode that allows for DNS and DHCP forwarding, essentially turning it into a switch.

You can also use any LAN cable you have lying around.

Yea he went into much more detail than we were clearly prepared to :)
Another note though - you can do this with a regular network cable/fly-lead - no need for a cross-over.
 
Go buy yourself a 8-port gigabit switch which you connect to the router and the PC's to the switch.
