I have an SSD but how do I use it.

So my OCZ 120GB Vertex 3 SSD arrived and I need some advice on how to use it properly. I’m going to load windows 7 on the SSD but I want my music, pictures and movies etc to be on my normal 1TB drive.

How do I do this, so that, if I press “Start”, “Pictures” the data will be on the 1TB drive?

Click START then right click on pictures go to Properties. Click include a Folder and point it to the 1TB

A better way is to move the folder by doing this:

Start>Computer>C drive(or where ever you installed your windows)>Users>(username)
Right click the folder you want on a different drive
Properties
Location
Input the new location
It will then ask you if you want to move/merge the folders say Yes.

Important folder to move are:
Documents
Desktop (especially this one)
Downloads
Music
Pictures
Videos


Before you install Windows 7 on the SSD, update the firmware by following this:

Latest firmware for Vertex 3 is FW 2.22
NEW! - Bootable tools for OCZ SSD's

Also make sure your motherboard is set to ACHI mode and not IDE for the ports.

Some tips when using the SSD:
1. NEVER DEFRAGMENT IT.

To disable Windows Defragmenter follow the following:

Start
Type in services.msc
Press Enter
In the list go to Disk Defragmenter and right click it
Properties and change the startup type to disabled
Apply and stop the services if it is running already.

2. NEVER FORMAT IT, there are two kinds of formats, a "quick" and a full format (which takes ages), when you install your Windows 7 just click on the SSD to install it, don't like format or anything else. If you ever need to format your SSD and reinstall Windows use the Secure Erase from the bootable tools from OCZ.

if your pictures don't take up huge amounts of space, it can be good to have them on the SSD, particularly if they are high-res and you view them often.

OS plus basic applications (not including things like PS, CS5, visual studio) takes up about 20GB, so you should have plenty of space to store images too.

set your downloads directory to off the SSD - this can fill up quickly. and torrents, too - utorrent will by default keep the incomplete torrents on the drive the OS is installed on.

If using windows 7 make sure you disable the auto defrag every wednesday.

Should disable the service entirely actually by doing the following:

Start
Type in services.msc
Press Enter
In the list go to Disk Defragmenter and right click it
Properties and change the startup type to disabled
Apply and stop the service if it is running already.

Follow this guide for setting up Windows 7 optimally for a SSD install. Make a backup disk image after you're done with everything updates included) and store that away. You don't have to do everything the guide says, particularly for disabling services (though that is optional and doesn't hurt to do it) but you must only follow the guide's recommendations to set up the drive to use MBR rather than GPT.

Also for Windows to detect the drive as an SSD you'd actually need to run the WEI tests. It doesn't disable the defrag service but enables TRIM support - the defrag service and schedule needs to be disabled manually, as does the indexing service.

Tonight is the night. I'm gonna try all these tricks.
