cant network.. please help.

I have just networked my 2 pc's together using a switcher hub. I have my router connecting to port 1 and the two pc's connecting to port 2 and 3 on the switcher.

They can talk to each other and both pc's connect to the Internet if i dial up on each one individually, but i cant get the other pc to connect to the Internet through the lan.

First i tried placing the default gateway of the router into my TCP/IP settings of the other pc but that does not work. I was told that i should log into the control panel of the router and check the settings but that does not work either.

My default gateway on the router is 165.165.215.146, i have a ADSL Router pots modem, i bought it from telkom.

Any suggestions?

Stupid question but are both machines on the same IP address range as the router? Or are you using DHCP? All 3 devices must be in the same range IE: 192.168.1.X

OH and your Router IP (165.165.X.X) will be your external address not your internal ip to be used for routing as a gateway.

yeap the machines are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2

but it is NOT on the ip range of the router

here is what is says on ipconfig...

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway :

PPP adapter Telkom 1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address : 165.165.193.58
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 165.165.193.58

what should i do?

Thanks

What works for me is not defining any static IP's on the network machines. Also see if you can ping a website like yahoo or google. It might be that you need to set your browser to "connect directly" to the internet instead of using dial-up or something.

Thanks MFour,

that didnt seem to help though, still can't ping.

Telkom Support are a bunch of monkeys aswell.
still waiting for them to "call me back"

What you have to do is to get it working without the Telkom Software (Like a real router). If you have that working, then any PC connected to the switch will be able to connect through the router.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway :

PPP adapter Telkom 1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix :
IP Address : 165.165.193.58
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 165.165.193.58

The first is you PC's network settings/adress. The second if the details for your the Telkom Software you use (And want to throw away).

Your router will have an "internal network" IP in the same range as your PCs (192.168.0.0 maybe?) That IP is the one you want to connect to in your web browser to see you admin page for your router. (Do you have a manual? It should state the setup in there). Your router will probably be setup to have a DHCP server running. Part of the DHCP settings (On the nice routers) is the Gateway setting. Set this to be the router IP. (If the router settings does not have the Gatewat as part of the DHCP, then you will have to manually set the Gateway in Windows for each PC). This Gateway is so the PCs know where to connect to to get to the internet (Get it? Gate Way).

If the ipconfig on your PC tells you your PC (not the telkom software) has a Gateway value, then you should be working 90%.

The other thing you have to setup in your router is your ADSL user/password. (Should be under WAN settings of something)

After this is done the rest of the default settings should work for you. (And now you can throw away the software)

Unfortunately I can't find much info on Marconi site, so I can't see which model or get the manual. Hope this helps.

Just a thought, is your router set up correctly? Make sure it's not in bridged mode.
You should have received a instruction manual with the router/modem, make sure you set it correctly for PPPoE Ethernet connection and not for use with the software provided on the CD (do not install using software CD). The software CD will only give you so called "dial-in" ability, and if you do not have 2 or more concurrent connection option from your ISP, it will only allow 1 user at a time.

Hope I'm on the right track here.

Just to chuck in my 1/2 cent worth.

Are you pinging the www or an ip address? If a w record then do an ipconfig /all and check that you are being assigned a dns server address.
Or/and

Get on your router. i think it is usually set to 192.168.10.200 internally. username and password is usually admin admin (change the password asap).

Goto pc 1 assign ip 192.168.10.100 255.255.255.0 def gateway 192.168.10.200
DNS 168.95.1.1
Try browse net. If this works then seems like your ip settings for DHCP are not configured correctly. Check your IP range for DHCP. Could be only able to assign 1 address. Change this to how ever many you need.
Check these or just manually assign 192.168.10.101 to your next machine with the same other dns defgate etc. If you only plan to use 2 or 3 machines this is ok but is far from ideal because you will oneday have a new pc for the kid, wife, significant other so sorting out DHCP is the way to go.

PM or email me if I can help further.

By the way uninstall the telkrap software that came witht the router. This will probably solve the matter all together
