I made a Chillstep

Can you go over the process you use to create a track and the type of processing and samples etc... Do you make them yourself, tweak presets?

Also please tell why you are moving from Ableton? Having tried pretty much every DAW I think Ableton has to be the most intuitive;

I could only listen to it on my macbook speakers so no real critique yet, but I'd suggest rethinking the clap in favour of a deep snare, or perhaps a combination of the two. I'd also look at playing with the beat during the bass lead sections, particularly the hi hat arrangement. IMO it doesn't tie in with the bass lead and does get a little repetitive.

Other than that I enjoyed it...

Ahh snap. There was a panning problem upon export, the bass is panned a bit to the right for some reason. This also screws with my automation, I’ll have to re-upload next week.

I love it  not bad at all!

Thank you. :)

All samples (Drums) are recorded in our studio during sample recording sessions myself and my colleague took serious time to make. Not track dependant but we have lists and lists of these from acoustic drum sets to strange sound objects. The VST’s I used in this includes Sylenth and Massive for everything you hear from strings to the bass. I’ll share the presets shortly as I’m more of a create it from scratch type of person every time.

The Process of creating any track differs from person to person. I myself normally start off with building a lead synthesizer in this case that is the baseline. Then build a drum group and simulate it over the lead to understand where what works. This track aka Dubstep however is not really complex at all nor is any track of the genre really. The only hard part is trying to make it sound unlike the 10 billion other dubstep songs out there.

Ableton is great for producing electronic music and I like the organization of all the audio channels and effects. It is clean and not to difficult to re-edit something on it. However it sucks when it comes to mastering a track not to mention we are a recording studio, Cubase allows me to record 16 channels of audio one shot where Ableton falls over due to cpu usage.

The snare is not a bad idea, I’ll consider this back at my desk on Monday but I’m in love with the epicenes of a clap. The drums are extremely repetitive though but it kinda worked with this instead of using too much glitching and changing the drum beat such as normal dubstep. It took a really short time setting up the drum loops for this. The track however IMO drops away too much on the first break which started to annoy me, I’ll also have to relook this. All in all thanks for the insightful reply. :)

Just listened to this on iPad speakers and must say I'm really enjoying it from what I've heard. You are obviously very skilled in production. Wish I was able to do something even remotely so liar to this.

When you do get to a finished product, you could probably get some exposure by submitting the track to a YouTube channel called MrSuicideSheep. He promotes music like this.

I love Chillstep. Blackmill has to be my favourite producer.

I'll check that out thanks :) Still waiting for some more criticism before the final release.

Fixed the panning. Tried the snare Idea but it didn't come out as I hoped. If this is truly necessary I'll need to re-edit the entire track as it just didn't fit and changed the style too much. I re-arranged some hi hats so that the sequence alternates a bit over the phrase.

I like it maybe a few suggestions...

Kick is SUPER bassy... playing it on my z2300s with the bass turned down and it's still thudding. But then again I prefer a lighter kick.

Also I know it's chillstep, but the wobble synth you are using gets a bit monotonous. Maybe you could add some more grit... make it dirtier:P

Thirdly and finally would be nice to hear it with a bigger drop :D

Sounds cool, nothing to say production wise, as I've gone backwards about five years skills wise, in that regard. :(

Yup the kick drum pushes through heavily. This is a problem I kinda get with the studio monitors I run, they don't clip until the track is unbearably loud. The side chain compressors are actually the problem here where the base line gets pushed out of the way to much allowing the kick to play a bit load. The monitors makes everything sound great through them but I would like to buy some production headphones in the near future before even attempting to master this and some house stuff I currently working on.

I wouldn't Dirtify the bass line though, it is a really simple process of just increasing one dry/wet knob but this kinda track is way too minimal for that type of crushiness. :D The entire track still needs to go through mastering so this is a really raw export still.

Ohk cool I just found the wobbles sounding a bit disjointed from the rest.

Some parts to me actually sounds like there's some timing issues but I rechecked the entire envelope today and it all looks perfect. I'm considering changing some more parts where I hear the weirdness to a completely different synth but will take some time though. Is this type of glitching what you meant by making it more dirtyish? Cause I'm up for that.

Edit:

Probably gonna further experiment on the suggestions next week. Is busy with work that needs to be completed on Friday.
