My ADSL line was down for the whole day, so I decided to use my phone as a modem. I might've made the rookie error of leaving my downloads running. I might've used about 450MB before realizing said error. I might be the only tool to blame in this situation.

Firstly, is the going rate for out-of-bundle data still R2 per MB? That's going to HURT.

Secondly, I get 110MB data every month as part of my contract. Would it be possible to strike some sort of.... bargain with Vodacom that I just ... don't get the data for a few months, instead of coughing up out of my ass.

The end of this month is seriously going to suck.
 
I doubt vodacom will "bargain" with you. The 110mb they provide you is worth less than the R2 OOB.
 
I'm pretty sure they don't charge VAT on data, that seems a bit... excessive. At least I had about 100MB carry-over data so that'll take a fair chunk out of it. Sigh. So they don't bargain huh. Well that sucks. I guess in all fairness it could've been a lot worse though, compared so some of the horror stories that come from roaming costs and whatnot.

Vodacom provides the service, you use it, you pay for it.

By now we all know about the OOB shark.

On a positive note, I hope it was quality porn & not a few linux/windows updates.
 
Kingrob - absolutely, that's what makes it so frustrating. Kind of like bumping your car while parking, it' stupid and there's no-one at fault except you.

Considering I have uncapped ADSL, no matter what it was, it's still a waste. School fees indeed.

Who is this VCD / VodacomData that you speak of?
 
Is that on contract? OUCH! But thats how everyone learn. One month or another you get that huge bill and from there on you swear by the prepaid.
 
The R2/MB OOB is VAT inclusive. Secondly, VC thrives on your OOB usage - so no chance with bargaining there i'm afraid.
 
Are you sure you've only used 450Mb? I'm only asking because I usually use more data than the item I am downloading. Eg. Download speed is 200kb/s but the transfer rate on the modem application shows something like 1Mb/s download and 100kb/s upload.

This means I could easily have used about 100Mb to download a 20Mb file.
 
marco79, that's very strange. I don't know too much about wireless net though. I wonder, does a dropped/scrambled packet that has to be re-requested count as data throughput? In that case, wouldn't poor signal end up costing you more due to overhead? This is just speculation based on poor knowledge (dangerous).

In any case, this is what was reported by my Android data monitoring app which has been spot-on accurate so far, not based on the size of what was downloaded.

I can't find VCD on the user list, do you have a link to his profile?
