Doesn't need to be a beast, just reliable and cost-effective.

Needs to do officey type stuff, doesn't need to do large hadron collier type calculations.

Bonus would be a slightly higher resolution screen than standard.

Either online shops, or a Cape Town retailer.

Thanks in advance!

I wasn't able to find a laptop around the R5k mark that has a bigger resolution screen than 1366x768 (HD Ready) sorry. This is also the standard at the moment for laptop screen resolutions.

Why not buy yourself something entry level then use an external mouse, keyboard and monitor with it?
I use mine like that at my desk every day and only ever use the laptop's screen when Im out of the office.

Mecer. Bought myself a w370st gaming laptop with i5 processor, 8GB ram, blu ray writer, dedicated NVIDIA graphics, FULL HD display and 500GB hard drive for R11k. Great value for money and very upgradeable laptop.

That's great, except that it satisfies absolutely none of the OP's requirements. (Quite the opposite in some areas.)

I was trying to illustrate that MEcer is great value for money and perhaps he could look at their range to find something suitable which will be cheaper than the rest which are similar in spec.
