If you are not using it for desktop use but merely as a server then buy the cheapest laptop (pentium or celeron) you can find I reckon.

Off topic but what would you recommend as a good Home Server OS, mainly for backing up photos etc not really for playing media.

Any linux distro will do. Something like clearos might appeal to noobs.
