Upon research I see that to get one i need to gross above R60k pa?

I am a student and Tutor here and there but the HR department of my workplace sent me an email asking me what my tax number is?

I've worked for them for two years and they have never asked me this..

How do I get a tax reference number then?

Thanks

CM

You need to go in to a SARS branch with payslips, ID Book, Proof of residence, etc...

If you earn a salary regardless of the amount you need to register, click here for the form IT77 you need to complete, attach your id, bank statement as well as proof of income and drop it at your nearest SARS branch

You can also apply for a tax number by phoning SARS these days. No need to go into a branch any more...

No you need to go into SARS, wife phoned SARS and they told her for a tax number she needs to come in with a fully completed IT77 form and the proof of income, proof of address etc...

Odd. I know of two people who've done theirs over the phone, one very recently who'd just got in to SA. This was a brand new tax number...

From SARS Website:

Are you a first-time tax payer?

You need to register as a tax payer in order to get a tax number. Please complete the IT 77 form, then visit your nearest SARS branch and hand it in together with:

• A certified copy of your Identification Document or Passport (drivers licences are not accepted);
• Your bank details: either a cancelled cheque or a certified/original copy of your account statement or an original letter from the bank confirming your bank details;
• Income details for the last 3 years e.g. copies of IRP5 etc;

Once you have been registered and given your tax number, you can then register on www.sarsefiling.co.za as a tax payer and fill out your returns online.

Did they say you NEED one or do they just want to know if you have one.

If you are below the threshold its PAYE and you wont need one.

Its worth getting done now though, while you are a student and have the time.

Also it's only if you are over 120k now, as I was stuck in a SARS office for quite sometime last year, duplicate tax numbers etc fun times.
