I need help with getting a laptop for someone

A friend of mine's son is enroll to start a course in CAD. The father initially promised to get him the laptop, but has since lost his job and (apparently) does not have the money available.

The parents are separated and being the IT guy (FFS), the mother who's an old friend of mine, asked me to help.

Budget, she hasn't really stated, just that she would prefer to pay in terms as she would not be able to fund a purchase outright before he has to start classes because she had to pay the course fee.

So are you looking for a laptop to be donated or funds to be donated towards buying 1?
 
Does it really need to be a laptop?
 
Based on the required spec a laptop wont be less than 15k...
 
Just asking because someone might have a few components lying around they're willing to donate and they're being unnecessarily pedantic with the laptop requirement.

Why would I ask for donations? I clearly stated she prefers to buy from a place that allows her to pay in terms because I know a laptop with the minimum requirements won't be less than 10k

I agree with you 100% on this. I'm going to try to convince her to look at a PC, especially given that he already has a laptop - it meets none of the specs though. i3, resolution too low, IGPU, etc
 
The only option I can recommend is a vendor that has either PayJustNow or PayFlex payment options, or otherwise, credit facilities, but this could be pricey and taking out a smaller personal loan might work out cheaper.
 
Definitely a desktop if possible. I know Takealot allows purchases on credit, perhaps she could try that route?

Not the place I'd usually recommend but the payment option is limiting.

Might be worth just chucking those items into a cart on wootware or something and see what the total comes to.

Maybe try one of the carbonite legit resellers thats also on bidorbuy then you can use their repayment options
 
@The_Ogre does she have a specific budget? Would you be willing to build the PC for her if she buys components?

I'll give her a call later and get back to you. Just in a meeting right now.

Of course I'll build it, the last PC I built was a socket 1150 and GTX 1070 based machine before I gave up gaming and moved to laptop fulltime. So I might be a bit rusty :p

OK, the place where he'll be staying during the week is not at their house, so she needs him to be able to access his course material and work when he's at home as well as when he's attending during the week.

So it's more of a mobility issue.
 
You'd probably be looking at something like this:

There are the wootbooks but then you have to worry about windows licensing and putting your own memory and disk and whatnot inside of it.

Wootware does allow for card checkout now, but I'm unsure if that allows you to pay it off over a few months.

That really isn't bad at all!
CPU in that should be a 5800H and the 3050 will be better than a 1650 for sure.
Takealot definitely has that credit terms feature too when you're paying by card.
 
Update:

She bought this, just a refurbed one

So now the boy asked me about this message. He wants to put the sim in the laptop, but gets this message. I have a 7250 and have never put a SIM in mine. Do any of you know where to enter the APN settings?
