I know i can do a simple google search for this answer but they dont list what types of files they are able to recover.

Most freeware software i can get will get me the odd jpeg or .mov or those usual files.
I cannot find a program (affordable) that will recover .NEF (RAW camera files)

I have lost ove 25,000+ pictures due to stupidity and not backing them up and they are like 1 quarter of my lifes work.

if anyone has any suggestions or knows of recovery firms that can recover .NEF files please let me know.

Thanks

How did you lose the files?
eg. Did you delete the files to the Recycle Bin and then emptied it?

Secondly, did you work on the PC a lot after you've done this? The more stuff you do/write to your hard drive after you've deleted files reduces the odds of successful recovery.

It was my photo HDD an external, i switched over from windows to mac and thought i had copied everything over to my time capsule so i formatted my external HDD, i have tried to recover a few times but no i have not worked on that drive since it happened.

I think DJ swears by some recovery company, just pm him.

For physical data recovery, there is no better company in the world than Southbit. See my signature.

I think the OP is talking about having accidentally deleted some files from his hard drive and needs software to recover it - perhaps Southbit can help out here too. However if the drive needs to be recovered, then Southbit are definitely your answer...

Hi There,
You say you had formatted the drive was it a quick format (which just deletes the directory) or something more intense?

If more intense then I doubt if you are going to get it back. However the companies suggested above would be the best to apporach and they are going to want to know all the actions that you ahve tried to recover the data.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards

Tim

You could always use FTK imager and use that to analyse the drive. It is a forensic tool so it should show you all recoverable files. It is free to use for non-commercial so just google it.

Can you give information on what filesystem the drive was, and what you formatted it to?

You said you moved from Windows to Mac, so was the drive NTFS and was formated to HFS? FAT32 involved anywhere? The more info the better.

You're welcome to book the drive in with us, we'll have a look and see what we can find and provide you with a list of what is recoverable, all no charge up until that point.

Sorry for the slow response time.

I had the HDD on NTFS initially, then after thinking i had coppied everything over via LAN to the time capsule, I did a quick format in mac into the new mac FAT32 mac jouralated system (i think that is what it is called).

I used a few freeware mac programs to try recover the pics but the free ones could only let me veiw what was recovereable and not actually recover it.

After a day or so of scaning the drive the program had found 450+ GB of files then it let me sort it into what they were and i saw 90% of what the program recovered was the pictures i lost. The ones in .NEF format. But to buy that program is close to R900 to buy.

I am not sure what other info you guys need to know?

I actually bought Mac Keeper because it has a recovery function but it will not recover .NEF programs and that program was not the cheapest either...

What would a company charge me to recover +/- 420GB of files?
